Testing a premium CBD oil product

A cannabis expert tries an assortment of CBD-infused oils and water-soluble tinctures at a variety of potencies and price points to see how effectively they integrate into wellness regimens, relieve short term and chronic pain, quell both incapacitating and mild anxiety, and support healthy sleep.

The large selection of CBD oils available on the market may feel, at least a bit overwhelming, especially when comparing textures, flavors, delivery systems, potencies and price points. Despite an inarguably flooded market, cannabis celebrities, established lifestyle brands and even our own community members are all potentially producing the next best CBD oil.

As users, the primary concern when shopping for a therapeutic CBD oil is where to begin their search, especially when so many brands are putting out so many exemplary products, and others, well, not so much.

Comparison of 27 different CBD oil products

With all the various CBD oils, infusions and tinctures proclaiming to be the most potent and most effective products both in stores and online, it can be difficult to narrow down which products are highly effective, therapeutic quality CBD infusions and which should be ignored. With that in mind, our experts auditioned over 30 top-rated CBD oils and tinctures at a number of price points and potencies to determine which infusions were truly recommendation-worthy and why. (See how we test.)

Best All Around CBD Oil

Best Overall: NuLeaf Naturals Multi-Cannabinoid Oil

NuLeaf’s multi cannabinoid oil is for the well-rounded canna-wellness enthusiast.

Full spectrum CBD oil product with CBC, CBG, and CBN cannabinoids

Available for $89 at NuLeaf Naturals

Nuleaf’s multi cannabinoid oil took our top spot for the best CBD oil over the course of testing for a number of reasons: first, its full spectrum formula features measured doses of CBD, CBC, CBG, and CBN, next, the carrier oil used is organic hemp seed, giving the oil an earthy, unadulterated profile and mouthfeel, and finally, the dosing was easy to control and the effects both hyper-responsive and super easy to build upon.

Pros & Cons

This oil’s complex multi-cannabinoid formula captivated us on a number of levels. It’s a mood-boosting, focus supporting, whole-body wellness supplement foremost, but beneath that is a shimmery, mood brightening perspective shifter that is buildable, consistent, and responsive enough for day or nighttime use.

The effects were resolute; mood lifting, stress soothing, focus sharpening, and body lightening – all proportional to my resting state. When used as part of my AM routine, the woody profile had an inoffensive mouthfeel, and similarly in the evening, the hemp-y flavor was mild enough to not interfere with my oral health routine. The effects are a bit too sheer for targeted pain relief, though the tincture is an effective nausea reliever.

Additionally, the overall physical relaxation the oil offers sublingually would well compliment a salve or edible as a pain/discomfort relief package. Overall, this oil offered the most comprehensive, responsive effects of any CBD oil tested, and its straightforward, unflavored formulation appealed to our more specific preferences. Your tastes, of course, may vary.

Pros

  • Full spectrum extract
  • Multi-cannabinoid formula with a balanced ratio of CBD, CBN, CBG, CBC
  • Mood lifting
  • Quick activation
  • Unflavored
  • Made with organic hemp
  • Long lasting effects
  • Easy dosing

Cons

  • Earthy flavor may not appeal to all users
  • Unnecessarily large packaging
  • More expensive than other brands

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood lift, increased focus, increased patience, mild energy boost when used in the morning, and restful sleep when taken before bed, upset stomach relief
  • Good For: Morning and bedtime routine integration
  • Not Good For: Candy-mouth sugar freaks – this is an unadulterated mouthful of hemp seed oil

Medterra Full Spectrum CBD + THC Oil

Medterra’s full spectrum blend offers an all-purpose CBD oil with super responsive effects.

Medterra full spectrum CBD oil with THC
Photo: Medterra

Available for $89.99 at Medterra

Medterra’s full spectrum CBD + THC oil features a potent 50mg dose of CBD bolstered by a 2mg of THC, which may be a swoon worthy for users with sensitive systems. The formula is rich with minor cannabinoids, however, so the effects are far more therapeutic and fortifying than recreational. This tincture’s particular design makes it a potent sleep support, wellness routine addition and anxiety quencher. Medterra’s CBD + THC oil uses an organic coconut MCT carrier.

Read our Medterra review

Pros & Cons

Medterra’s full spectrum formula was a great addition to my seasoned stoner’s daily wellness kit, though it does sit on the costlier end of the oil spectrum. The oil is super fast absorbing, and when taken first high in the morning, I could feel effects like increased focus, gentle mood lightening and very mild physical relaxation within half an hour. Those brightening effects may have been antithetical to my PM wellness routine, but they were a nice panacea for intermittent bouts of anxiety.

For cannabis users with less of a THC tolerance however, this tincture might hit in a way more relaxing, even insomnia reliving way. Users reviews laud the tincture for its effective sleep support, mostly attributing the efficacy to Medterra’s THC balance, so consider your own tolerances and preferences before committing to a bottle (and note: Medterra also makes a broad spectrum, THC-free oil).

Pros

  • Full spectrum extract
  • Fast absorption
  • Light citrus flavor
  • Potent
  • 2mg of THC per 50mg CBD dose
  • Organically grown hemp
  • Responsive
  • US Hemp Authority Certified

Cons

  • May feel too intense for some users

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, increased focus, anxiety relief, sleep support
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration
  • Not Good For: Anyone who feels 2mg THC gummy is too intense for comfort

cbdMD Full Spectrum CBD Oil

cbdMD full spectrum CBD oil with THC
Photo: cbdMD

Available for $59.99 at cbdMD

cbdMD’s Full Spectrum CBD oil is an affordable tincture with a straightforward formula that absorbs quickly as a sublingual, but is also a highly effective topical. The dose is a robust 25mg CBD per dropper, and the unflavored variety has a nutty, toasty, unadulterated profile that established cannabis consumers will likely appreciate. cbdMD’s carrier is an MCT oil.

Read our cbdMD review

Pros & Cons

cbdMD’s 750mg bottle of CBD oil is very straightforward. The flavor, the fragrance and the soft way it absorbed into my palette all indicated – and delivered – an unexpected CBD experience. In the morning, a dose was a nice assist to a strong cup of tea and coffee, in the evening, a dose was supportive of restful sleep. It assuage some hormonal cramping and physical aches, but when I fumbled the bottle and splashed a bit on my tendonitis plagued thumb, I learned it also acted as a pretty effective topical.

Though topical relief is not this oil’s recommended use, I thought the universal efficacy spoke to the purity of the product, even if it was discovered on account of my fumbling fingers. Bonus, I rubbed a bit of the leftover splashed oil on my face and my cheeks felt like cashmere for the rest of the day.

Pros

  • Full spectrum extract
  • Fast absorption
  • Classic, toasted cannabis flavor
  • Potent
  • Fast absorbing
  • Effective topical
  • Responsive
  • US Hemp Authority Certified

Cons

  • Toasted cannabis flavor may not appeal to all users

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, increased focus, anxiety relief, sleep support
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration, relaxation, focus, sleep support
  • Not Good For: Folks who cringe at earthy cannabis flavors

Koi Full Spectrum CBD Tincture

Koi’s full spectrum CBD oil is great for sweet-toothed users in need of a medium potency relief.

Koi full spectrum CBD tincture
Photo: Koi

Available for $79.99 at Koi

We auditioned the Koi Complete Full Spectrum Key Lime Tincture 1000mg CBD variety, a potent formulation with a sweet-tart lime flavor and quick absorbing coconut MCT oil carrier. This responsive oil infusion is suitable for both day and evening use, and though the overly-large box seems a bit excessive for a 1oz bottle, the branding is clear and messaging easy to digest.

Pros & Cons

As part of my morning wellness routine, I thought the key lime flavor was a bit cloying, but for users who crave sweeter morning delights, this tincture will likely suit their needs. Efficacy wise, I found this tincture to support a focused morning whether I started the day working at my desk or engaging in a bit of AM fitness – in that regard, it was also excellent in aiding recovery.

As far as nighttime use, both my partner and I found this tincture to support restful sleep, and saw potential for an effective sleep aid. Users’ reviews support that assertion, with a large swath of users reporting relief from insomnia, stress, and the type of superficial pain that prevents fulfilling rest.

Pros

  • Full spectrum
  • Fast absorption
  • Potent
  • Responsive

Cons

  • Synthetic sweet flavor
  • Not organic

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, anxiety relief, sleep support, stress relief
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration, relaxation, sleep support, minor pain relief
  • Not Good For: Users who’d rather avoid overly-sweet tinctures

Papa & Barkley Full Spectrum CBD Drops

For cannabis purists who celebrate earthy profiles.

Woman using Papa & Barkley CBD oil for pain relief
Photo: Papa & Barkley

Available for $34.99 at Papa & Barkley

Papa & Barley’s CBD Releaf Drops are highly celebrated for their full spectrum efficacy, which, even at a reduced potency, seemed to address a number of issues. This particular variety of Releaf Drops features a 30mg dose, which may not seem particularly reduced cannabinoid count to the uninitiated, but even with their lower cannabinoid count, these Releaf Drops have an inarguably universal appeal.

Read our Papa & Barkley review

Pros & Cons

Papa & Barkley’s Releaf Drops were a panacea for our whole family during a particularly stressful holiday. While visiting us from out of state, one parent was rushed to the ER for an emergency surgery. The other parent was wracked with anxiety, fear, stress and insomnia. By stealth medicating their meals (with their consent – of course) we were able to sidestep the worst of the emotional exhaustion we were all feeling having an immediate family member in isolation (our local hospital could not allow visitors due to Covid protocols).

As part of my daily wellness routine, Releaf Drops supplied relaxation, focus, an even mood and a clear mind. When used as an emotional panacea, effects were felt within a half hour and included reduced stress, anxiety and depression as well as super deep, ultra-restful sleep.

Pros

  • Full-spectrum and whole plant extract
  • Rich, earthy flavor
  • Fast absorption
  • Potent
  • Affordable
  • Responsive

Cons

  • Not organic

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, anxiety relief, sleep support, stress relief, physical recovery, pain relief
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration, relaxation, sleep support, minor pain relief, recovery
  • Not Good For: Users who prefer refined, sweet, flavored tinctures

Green Roads Full Spectrum CBD Oil

For folks who need a syrupy, full bodied texture in their CBD oil.

Woman holding a full spectrum CBD oil product
Photo: Green Roads

Available for $109.99 at Green Roads

Green Roads Original CBD Oil is a full spectrum tincture with a delivery system that’s unnecessarily complicated (the 1 oz bottle arrives in an oversized box accompanied by a separate syringe and cap adaptor for dosing) but super efficient at maintaining a kind-of stasis wherein anxiety, stress, depression and superficial pain are all assuaged. The texture leaves a bit to be desired, with the formulation resulting in a thicker, syrupy oil with a more domineering mouthfeel. Green Roads uses a combination of glycerine, MCT oil, sunflower lecithin and seed oil as well as hemp seed oil as carriers.

Read our Green Roads review

Pros & Cons

Green Roads CBD Oil was inarguably the most challenging of the oils tested for this roundup of the best CBD oils. While the oils’s efficacy is plain (while testing, the product proved to be super supportive of healthy sleep, as well as reducing anxiety and leveling moods) the delivery left so much to be desired. For example, rather than the industry standard eyedropper bottle, Green Roads packs their bottles alongside a separate plastic syringe and dosing lid. It felt unnecessary, not only did it not simplify dosing, it was far too reminiscent of a pharmaceutical injection. Anyone triggered by that action is not likely to find comfort in this manner of dosing, even if it is sublingually.

That said, those who prefer something richer and more toothsome may appreciate the full bodied richness of this oil. While other tinctures are ultra-light, super-sheer and quick to absorb, this thick treacle is quite the opposite. It’s heavy, cloying, and the aftertaste lingers at the back of the palette long after the dose has been absorbed. For me, this was a less than ideal delivery of an all-too-tangible potion, but if typical, simple MCT infused oils feel too light for your tastes, Green Roads’ viscous canna-sap has you covered.

Pros

  • Full spectrum
  • Super potent
  • Responsive

Cons

  • Not organic
  • Overwrought packaging/dosing system
  • Thick, syrupy mouthfeel
  • Slow to absorb
  • Acetic aftertaste
  • Expensive

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Anxiety relief, sleep support, stress relief, minor pain relief, mild recovery support
  • Good For: Wellness routine integration, relaxation, sleep support, minor pain relief, recovery
  • Not Good For: Anyone adverse to thick, syrupy, oil with a strong terpy aftertaste

Best THC-Free CBD Oils

These Broad-Spectrum and Isolate CBD oils have 0% THC; some may include non-psychotropic cannabinoids such as CBN, CBG, and CBC.

Medterra Ultra Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

A universal tonic for users adverse to THC.

Medterra broad-spectrum CBD oil without THC
Photo: Medterra

Available for $64.99 at Medterra

Medterra’s Ultra Broad Spectrum CBD oil is a THC-free version of their equally effective full spectrum oil, formulated for non-THC users to deliver long term wellness results and short term relief of anxiety, sleeplessness, stress and minor pain. We auditioned the citrus variety and found the 33mg dose to be a well calculated measure, able to support our daily health efforts as well as our emotional buffering needs with its 10:1 ratio of CBD to minor cannabinoids. Medterra’s Ultra Broad Spectrum Oil uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Pros & Cons

Medterra’s Ultra Broad Spectrum oil is light, quick absorbing, and just citrusy enough to brighten up its aftertaste. Efficacy-wise, both my partner and I found that despite the exclusion of, ahem, certain cannabinoids, the entourage effect was still very much palpable.

We both decided the oil was better suited for morning use; though nighttime use supported restful sleep, the effects seemed brighter and more compelling when we were still in the process of waking up. In this way the tincture felt like a fortification against some of the inevitable hassles of the day. Those primary eye-opening effects were not felt as strongly in the evening. That said, the oil was responsive enough to our resting states to support sleep.

The lack of THC also makes this a somewhat shareable product, especially with friends and family members who may not have the best rapport with THC, but are still interested in the therapeutic efficacy of CBD. For those users, this tincture would be an excellent, low-stakes/high potency introduction.

Pros

  • Broad spectrum
  • Mild citrus flavor
  • Fast absorption
  • Potent
  • Comparatively affordable
  • Responsive
  • US Hemp Authority Certified

Cons

  • Citrusy profile may be difficult to integrate into all but certain foods

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Increased focus, anxiety relief, increased cognition, stress relief, minor pain relief
  • Good For: AM wellness routines, focus, minor pain relief, mild stress/anxiety relief
  • Not Good For: Anyone who prefers a true, whole-plant full spectrum oil

Social CBD Isolate Drops

For contemporary users interested in modern botanical CBD blends.

Woman using a CBD isolate oil from Social CBD brand
Photo: Social CBD

Available for $29.99 at Social CBD

Social’s isolated CBD drops (500mg strength) feature approximately 16mg of CBD bolstered by turmeric, ginger root and lemon oil in each dose, which could be attractive to low toleranced users who prefer to stick with CBD and botanical blends to avoid any less familiar cannabinoids. Social CBD drops’ effects include stress relief, mood lifting, and physical recovery, all with a very mild delivery. Varsity users take note, this tincture is better suited for true cannabis teetotalers and may not deliver the most robust of results for those with well-worked-over endocannabinoid systems.

Read our Social CBD review

Pros & Cons

Both my partner and I were excited to integrate this oil into our wellness routines, but as we’re both daily THC users, we found the effects to be a bit too ephemeral for our needs, resulting in larger doses that either of us were comfortable with, especially at this price point. That said, we both still enjoyed effects like stress relief and physical recovery, we just also figured this product was far better suited to a user with little-no earnest experience with cannabis. In fact, Social CBD Drops would be a radically suitable introduction to CBD for the otherwise uninitiated.

The punchy lemon-ginger profile, the easy dosing, the silky mouthfeel and the mellow efficacy, of Social’s CBD Drops make them an introductory product for those interested in exploring CBD therapy, but nervous about the vast amount of minor cannabinoids in a full spectrum product.

Pros

  • Mild potency is great for newbies
  • Mild citrus flavor
  • Fast absorption
  • Comparatively affordable
  • Responsive

Cons

  • Isolate may not deliver super-potent effects to established full spectrum users
  • Not organic

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Minor anxiety relief, minor stress relief, minor pain relief, sleep and recovery support
  • Good For: Wellness routines, minor pain, anxiety and stress relief, sleep support
  • Not Good For: Anyone who prefers a true, whole-plant full spectrum oil

cbdMD Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

cbdMD’s THC-free oil is effective for both sleep and mood support.

Premium THC-free CBD oil for people who don't want to get high
Photo: cbdMD

Available for $59.99 at cbdMD

cbdMD’s Broad Spectrum CBD Oil delivers effects incredibly similar to the effects experienced from the full spectrum oil, though with a milder delivery better suited to a wider swath of users. Our 300mg bottle (which is now discontinued) offered 10mg doses, which felt suitable for elderly family members with little or no cannabis experience as well as less savvy cannabis users still navigating canna-therapeutics. This oil is available in a number of potencies and flavors. cbdMD uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Pros & Cons

cbdMD’s Broad Spectrum CBD Oil features a straightforward formulation that appealed to both my partner and mine’s predilection for super-simple tinctures with complex, natural flavors. The expected effects arrived with zero fanfare, and included daily stress abutment and anxiety relief as well as a gentle mood lift and a modicum of recovery support.

My partner in particular appreciated this oil for its sleep support after a long night shift. While I preferred an AM dose, they found the formula responsive enough to be suitable for night time usage. I too experienced sleep support benefits, but still preferred the effects I felt in the morning. To that end, this tincture is balanced enough for use day, night, afternoon, or anytime a slight attitude adjustment feels appropriate.

Pros

  • THC-free formula
  • Mild citrus flavor
  • Fast absorption
  • Comparatively affordable
  • Responsive
  • US Hemp Authority Certified

Cons

  • Not organic

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Stress relief, anxiety relief, sleep and recovery support, mood lift
  • Good For: Wellness routines, minor pain, anxiety and stress relief, sleep support
  • Not Good For: Anyone who prefers a true, whole-plant full spectrum oil

Read our JustCBD review

Pros & Cons

JustCBD’s full spectrum CBD oil might not have been, at first blush, particularly memorable on the tongue, but this essential formulation highlights grassy hemp rather than an orchestrated essential oil flavor profile, which, for a generous section of CBD oil aficionados, is preferable.

We integrated JustCBD into our daily wellness routine and quickly found that, though it undoubtedly provides mood lifting, focus enhancing effects, the physical relaxation this tincture provides is a bit better suited to bedtime use. That’s not to say this product is a sleep aid, but rather that its particular variation of physically calming effects are uniquely sleep supporting. User reviews supported our insight; overwhelmingly, user reviews site JustCBD Full Spectrum CBD Oil as an absolute panacea for insomnia.

Pros

  • Full spectrum extract
  • Very affordable, starting from $24.99
  • Mood lifting
  • Quick activation
  • Unflavored
  • Long lasting
  • Potent effects
  • US Hemp Authority Certified

Cons

  • No-frills flavor profile may not appeal to all users
  • Not organic

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood brightening, increased clarity, mild physical soothing, mild pain relief
  • Good For: Wellness routine integration, sleep support, mild pain relief
  • Not Good For: Anyone who prefers a sweet tincture – this formulation is, ahem, earthy

Cibadol Full Spectrum CBD Tincture

For super effective medicating on a budget.

Woman holding an affordable CBD tincture product
Photo: Cibadol

Available starting from $30 at Cibadol

Cibadol produces a distinctly potent, high quality full spectrum CBD oil with an inclusive price point that can be further lessened through subscription. This affordably efficient hemp oil is easily dosed, activates quickly, and the soothing, invigorating effects last for a while. For folks with sensitive palates, this tincture is unflavored, but retains the terp-rich profile of a live resin, and the straightforwardly pleasant aftertaste is refreshingly grassy. This tincture utilizes coconut MCT carrier oil.

Pros & Cons

Considering the potency of this oil, its price point is uniquely remarkable. With 1,800 mg of CBD per 30ml bottle, users would be justified in giving this bottle a double take given a price tag that’s less than half of its direct competitors. But affordability aside, this CBD oil tested high across the board; the responsive effects were suitable for evening restoration, recovery and sleep support as well as an AM mood boost. And bonus, it cleared a superficial toothache away in minutes.

The distinct flavor profile of this CBD oil suggests the source plants were cultivated with a robust mouthfeel in mind, and likewise the entourage effects feel untarnished by manufactured intentions. My partner enjoyed this oil as a PM recovery tonic post-workout. As part of a morning routine it provided a mood boost, clear focus, and an elastic physical lift that made daybreak workouts marginally easier to jump into.

Pros

  • Very affordable, starting at $30 for a 900mg bottle
  • Live resin aftertaste
  • Full spectrum extract
  • Mood lifting
  • Quick activation
  • Potent effects

Cons

  • Rich, terpy flavor profile may not appeal to all users
  • Not organic

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Increased focus and mild energy boost in the waking hours, mild physical soothing and sleep support in the evening, minor oral pain relief
  • Good For: Wellness routine integration, sleep support, mild pain relief, folks who enjoy brisk cannabis terpenes
  • Not Good For: Anyone who thinks weed tastes gross

Aspen Green CBD Oil

Aspen Green’s full spectrum hemp extract is perfect for folks in need of a potent dosage.

Strong CBD oil with THC
Photo: Aspen Green

Available for $144.99 at Aspen Green

Easily one of the tastiest CBD oils we enjoyed over the course of testing, Aspen Green’s 3,000 mg CBD oil was most favored for both its potency and its distinct smack of bitter grapefruit zest. This oil activates quickly, its effects are long lasting, and the layered entourage effects ensure both physical relaxation and an underlying, super-sheer euphoria that is suitable for both daytime and nighttime use. This oil utilizes an organic coconut MCT carrier oil.

Read our Aspen Green review

Pros & Cons

Aspen Green’s Full Spectrum CBD oil may not contain actual grapefruit zest, but the inclusion of essential orange and rosemary oils somehow contribute to a terp profile that is captivating to a bitter citrus lover like myself. Both my partner and I enjoyed this CBD oil as part of a daily wellness routine but found it a bit too easy to spill our sublingual doses; the dropper/applicator has a uniquely bent tip, which may have been conceived in order to make dosing easier, but we found, after too many misfires to blame user error, it’s more of a bug than a feature (thankfully, Aspen Green will be phasing out the bent-tip droppers soon).

On a positive note, when a THC smoke sesh resulted in a high that was quickly spinning into unmanageable couch-lock territory, a dropperful of Aspen Green presented a liferaft that cushioned the high without detracting from the positive effects of the THC. When taken solo, we appreciated the potent attitude adjustments and physical relaxation it brought to our day, but bonus – it can also possibly rescue you if you get too high.

Pros

  • Ultra-high potency
  • Bright, citrusy aftertaste
  • Full spectrum extract
  • USDA Certified Organic
  • Mood lifting
  • Focus supporting
  • Sleep supporting
  • Quick activation

Cons

  • Bent dropper makes for sloppy dosing
  • More expensive than other brands
  • Too strong for beginners

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Potent mood lift when taken during waking hours, mild physical soothing and sleep support in the evening, effective tempering of an especially forceful dab
  • Good For: Wellness routine integration, sleep support, mood regulation, buffering a THC high that’s a bit too intense for comfort
  • Not Good For: Users with low tolerance, those on a budget

Five CBD + THC Tincture

For users who prefer a sweeter, super-potent tincture.

Strongest CBD oil with THC for pain relief
Photo: Five

Available for $89.99 at Five CBD

Folks into a sweeter mouthful will likely appreciate the delicate, confectionery mouthfeel of Five CBD’s full spectrum, CBD + THC formulation. Each 30 ml bottle features a whopping 3,000mg of CBD and around 60mg of THC, which results in approximate doses with a 100:2 ratio of CBD to THC. Doses are rounded out with a full slate of supporting minor cannabinoids, offering even more health benefits and deeply felt effects. This oil utilizes organic coconut MCT carrier oil.

Read our Five CBD review

Pros & Cons

Five’s CBD + THC oil tincture was one of the first brands to pass through our testing routine. The first impressions were positive; the flavor was citrus sweet, the oil fast-absorbing under the tongue, and the onset offered a gentle, almost imperceptible attitude adjustment. When taken in the morning, the super mild psychotropic effects were only noticeable in contrast to my jittery coffee state, and I wondered, would someone familiar with such effects even realize them as anything more than mild elation. On a less caffeinated stomach, the effects were less jubilant, but still super comforting.

When taken in the evening, I thought this tincture brightened my eyes a bit, making me feel more awake than before I had taken my dose. It occurs to me that results will vary, but this particular tincture just worked better for me in the morning. It increased my focus, soothed my deskbound body, and kept my mood sunnier than it may have been otherwise.

Pros

  • Ultra-high potency
  • Offers three strengths: 1500mg, 3000mg, and 6000mg
  • Full spectrum extract featuring 2mg THC per dose
  • Sweet, confectionary aftertaste
  • Made with organic oil
  • Mood lifting
  • Focus supporting
  • Physically soothing
  • Quick activation

Cons

  • Not universally great for sleep
  • The stevia spiked sweet flavor will assuredly not appeal to those with earthier preferences
  • Can be too potent for beginners

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Ultra-sheer psychotropic effects (cheeriness, elasticity, positively altered cognition), mood lift, mild physical soothing, mild pain relief
  • Good For: Wellness routine integration for high capacity THC smokers, sleep support for those more sensitive to THC, mild pain relief
  • Not Good For: The confection averse

Lazarus Naturals Full Spectrum CBD Tincture

For users who appreciate earthy, complex flavors.

Lazarus Naturals high potency CBD tincture
Photo: Lazarus Naturals

Available for $40 at Lazarus Naturals

Having been acquainted with Lazarus Naturals while testing CBD salves, I auditioned their Classic, high potency oil tincture with high expectations. The Portland brand has a reputation for ultra-high quality products with amazing efficacy, and -spoiler- this CBD oil is right in line with the rest of their product slate. This oil utilizes both hemp seed and coconut MCT carrier oils and has an earthy, woody aftertaste and slower absorption.

Pros & Cons

The potency of Lazarus Naturals CBD oil is experienced not only through its efficacy, but also through its robust aftertaste, which is bitter and grassy enough to provoke a slight cringe from the uninitiated. Part of Lazarus’s appeal, in my opinion, is how authentic their products feel. These are, by all means, commercially manufactured, branded products, but they feel as if they were made by a neighborhood garden witch. And to a certain brand of consumer, that authenticity makes Lazarus Naturals particularly appealing.

I integrated this CBD oil into my AM wellness routine, and it delivered expected mood lifting and physically calming effects, but it also tempered an unmanageable mid-morning dab when I felt like I might have overconsumed. When taken in the evening, it remains responsive, providing either a smooth boost of clarity or a cushy complacency depending on the state of the user.

Pros

  • Potent effects
  • Offers CBD strength up to 6,000mg
  • Full spectrum extract
  • Very affordable at $0.03/mg
  • Mood lifting
  • Quick activation
  • Responsive effects
  • Unflavored
  • USDA Certified Organic
  • Long lasting
  • Easy dosing

Cons

  • Unadulterated, ultra-earthy flavor may not appeal to all users

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Increased focus, mood lift, increased clarity, mild physical soothing, superficial pain relief, recovery, tempering of THC
  • Good For: Wellness routine integration, sleep support, mild pain relief, buffering strong doses of THC
  • Not Good For: Anyone adverse to rich, earthy, mildly bitter flavor profiles

Another high potency, full spectrum CBD oil for users who prefer milder mouthfeels is Neurogan’s full spectrum citrus flavored variety. This formulation features 12,000mg of sungrown hemp CBD per 2 oz bottle and though it delivers effects suitable for both day and evening use, we found it to be slightly more supportive of a healthy bedtime routine. Neurgoan uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Read our Neurogan review

Pros & Cons

While Neurogan tested well as an addition to an AM wellness routine, we found it to be of particular value before bed. When taken in the waking hours, the physical and emotional effects were too sheer to shake up our routine in a noticeably positive way, but when taken in the evening, it felt like a perfect foil to a good night’s rest.

A 100mg single dose (0.5ml) supported an as-restful-as-possible 6 hours of sleep, which is as many hours as my 6 year old allows me to usually sleep. Rather than knocking me out for an extended rest, Neurogan’s formulation just supported the rest I could realistically fit into my schedule. The citrus-y flavor profile might not agree with minty toothpaste, so pro-tip, medicate about 15 minutes before your PM oral health routine.

Joy Organics CBD Oil

Joy Organics’ USDA Organic CBD oil is a super responsive, multi-purpose medicine cabinet addition.

Available for $44.95 at Joy Organics

Over the course of testing, we were able to audition two varieties of Joy Organics 75mg-per-dose CBD oil: full spectrum unflavored and broad spectrum, THC-free Tranquil Mint. These ultra-potent CBD oils delivered remarkably similar results; the full spectrum, unflavored variety offers a sheer, yet robust, slate of mood lightening and physically soothing effects, the broad spectrum variety offers a milder version of the same. This CBD oil uses an MCT carrier.

Read our Joy Organics review

Pros & Cons

Both iterations of this oil were straightforward and effective, shining for their clean flavors, and potent, long lasting effects. The full spectrum dose is a bit more multifaceted, with effects that emphasize improved cognition and lightened mood in a package responsive enough for day or evening use. While I preferred the unflavored full spectrum as part of my morning wellness routine, my super-active partner preferred to have a dose before bed to aid in physical recovery. We were both pleased with our results, mine being mental clarity, theirs being subconscious restoration. The full spectrum variety of Joy Organics CBD oil uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

The mint flavored, broad spectrum variety of Joy Organics CBD oil offers very similar effects of mental agility and physical recovery, though these are a bit more two-dimensional in their delivery. This oil is completely free of THC, but the effects are still smooth and potent, so it’s relatively more suitable for sensitive systems. Users take note, Joy Organic’s broad spectrum CBD oil uses olive oil as a carrier, rather than fast absorbing MCT oil, so anticipate a slick mouthfeel.

Pros

  • USDA Certified Organic (view certification)
  • Full spectrum and Broad spectrum extracts
  • Quick activation
  • Responsive effects
  • Potent effects
  • Mild flavor
  • Sleep support
  • Easy dosing

Cons

  • Oily sublingual finish on the broad spectrum variety

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood lift, increased comfort, mild physical soothing, superficial pain relief, sleep support
  • Good For: Wellness routine integration, sleep support, mild physical comfort, slight mood lift
  • Not Good For: People who need their sublingual to have a fast absorbing, clean finish

Charlotte’s Web USDA-certified CBD oil is perfect for users who prioritize curated flavors as well as high potency.

Available for $119.99 at Charlotte’s Web

We tested both Mint Chocolate and Lemon Twist variations of Charlotte’s Web Full Spectrum 60mg CBD oil, and while we couldn’t decide on which we preferred, the efficacy of each flavor is inarguable. With each formulation Charlotte’s Web has produced a fast acting, potent, easily dosed CBD oil with a sheer aftertaste of either ripe summer citrus or soothing mint mocha. Both variations tested were formulated with coconut MCT oil as their carrier.

Read our Charlotte’s Web review

Pros & Cons

Though Charlotte’s Web produces three flavors of their 60mg-per-dose CBD oil (Lemon Twist and Mint Chocolate, featured here, as well as Orange Blossom) we found the effects of the two we auditioned to be nearly identical. The only difference in effects we noticed were implanted by our own unique frames of reference. For me, Lemon Twist was a bright, sunny addition to my morning wellness routine, whereas Mint Chocolate soothed me in a way that felt appropriate for bedtime. When I swapped their timeframes, however, they worked as well as the other, making my own preferences the main differentiator.

Likewise, my partner thought starting the day with a Mint Chocolate exhale was pure luxury, and initially preferred the Mint Chocolate oil in the AM hours. They similarly thought the brisk lemon offered a cleaner mouthfeel, and was thus more suitable for bedtime. Results really do vary, but the bottom line was that the effects were responsive to our resting states, potent, and weirdly delicious (if you’re into hemp-y flavor foundations).

Pros

  • USDA Certified Organic (view certification)
  • Full spectrum extract
  • Potent effects
  • Responsive
  • Mood lifting
  • Sleep supporting
  • Quick activation
  • Delightful flavors
  • B Corp certified company

Pros

  • The unique, full spectrum flavor profiles are acquired tastes that may be challenging for uninitiated palettes

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Attitude adjustment, physical soothing, superficial pain relief, sleep support, mood mellowing, physical recovery
  • Good For: Wellness routine integration, sleep support, recovery, mild physical comfort, slight mood lift
  • Not Good For: People who avoid ultra-earthy, terpene festooned formulations

R&R CBD Tincture

For green witches taking a break from making their own medicated oils.

R+R Medicinals USDA organic hemp extract tincture

Available for $55 at R&R CBD

R&R CBD has a limited product line, but I think hard-nosed CBD hunters might find that more a virtue than a hindrance. R&R’s CBD oil for example, is available in two varieties – mint and unflavored, and though their packaging feels overwrought and overthought, the simple efficacy of the product is inarguable. We auditioned the unflavored variety and found that, earthy and woody as it is, it also delivered the complex aftertaste of lovingly cultivated cannabis, which definitely foreshadowed the effects to come. R&R CBD unflavored CBD oil uses coconut MCT oil as its carrier.

Read our R&R CBD review

Pros & Cons

R&R CBD’s CBD Oil was functionally challenging, first-impression-wise. The box was oversized to accommodate a negligible slip of paper marketing material, and as such felt a bit wasteful. Similarly, the wild-west-apothecary aesthetic felt targeted to a trendy, boutique demographic rather than the wider, therapeutic field of users.

The effects of this oil however, feel at odds with its packaging. The effects arrive with a sparkling onset that’s great for pre-workout fortification. The long lasting mood boost and physical ease can easily be exploited into something vaguely resembling a high (cashmere cognition, sheer euphoria) when paired with a healthy workout’s natural blast of aerobic serotonin. While this oil tested excellently as an addition to an AM routine, it was more of a standout for how interestingly the effects blossomed post-workout, but of course, your results may vary.

Pros

  • USDA Certified Organic
  • Full spectrum extract
  • Cognition support
  • Moderate, buildable dosing
  • Mild euphoria
  • Quick activation
  • Responsive
  • Fast absorption
  • Potent effects
  • US Hemp Authority Certified

Cons

  • The full spectrum flavor profile may be challenging for uninitiated palettes
  • Too much packaging

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood lift, increased focus, superficial pain relief, slight euphoria or “high” feeling
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration, pre-workout, physical recovery, improved cognition, calming anxiety
  • Not Good For: Folks with a concrete preference for flavored isolates

Bloom Farms Recover CBD Tincture

For cannabis purists looking for a daily supplement to aid in physical recovery.

Organic CBD tincture with pure ingredients
Photo: Bloom Farms

Available for $75 at Bloom Farms

Bloom Farms CBD Recover tincture was another masterfully produced but totally over-packaged CBD tincture oil whose first impression was more performative than necessary. Bloom Farms has a stellar reputation for straightforward, super-effective hemp and cannabis products, but their branding is almost aggressively chic, which can feel exclusionary to users with less cosmopolitan tastes. This Bloom Farms tincture uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Read our Bloom Farms review

Pros & Cons

Bloom Farms’ Recover CBD tincture is formulated with the brand’s highest concentration of cannabinoids,  (1200mg per 1 oz bottle) making for a well-rounded, multi-purpose sublingual that while indeed awesome for recovery, is also a great mood leveler, anxiety extinguisher and mild physical soother.

As part of a morning routine, this tincture was eye opening, soothing and mildly relaxing. The same effects occurred when taken in the evening, however they arrived in appropriate measure, easing me smoothly to sleep after a long night of work that may have kept my mind spinning all night otherwise. My partner appreciated this tincture for post workout recovery, and found when taken before bed, they woke up limber and pain free.

Pros

  • Full spectrum extract
  • Organically grown
  • Mood boosting
  • Easy dosing
  • Responsive
  • Fast absorption
  • Potent effects
  • Nutty, tart aftertaste

Cons

  • The full spectrum flavor profile is a tad on the bitter side
  • Difficult boxing may present an issue for users with mobility issues

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood lift, increased focus, superficial pain relief, recovery, anxiety relief
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration, physical recovery, improved cognition, calming anxiety
  • Not Good For: Folks with a concrete preference for flavored isolates

Cornbread Hemp Distilled CBD Oil

For folks who want full spectrum effects without skunky full spectrum flavor.

Full spectrum CBD oil made with USDA organic hemp flower
Photo: Cornbread Hemp

Available for $34.99 at Cornbread Hemp

Kentucky based Cornbread Hemp’s Distilled CBD oil is a light, ultra-smooth, unflavored oil that’s best for daytime use. This oil utilizes flower exclusively, and the distillation process ensures the tincture is free from the earthy aftertaste delivered by the plant’s chlorophyll-packed leaves and stalks. Cornbread Hemp uses coconut MCT oil as its carrier.

Pros & Cons

In a crowded field, Cornbread Hemp stands out for its distilled CBD oil, which delivered expected effects (mood balance, physical soothing, anxiety relief) in what seemed like the only truly unflavored package. Though the effects were markedly more sheer than products that utilize whole plants, the effects felt like they would be well-suited to users with considerable sensitivities, particularly to flavor.

As a part of my morning wellness routine, this oil was acceptably supportive of my focus, mood and energy, but in the evening the effects were clouded by my resting state, which was too powerful to be swayed by this distillation. A more sensitive user will undoubtedly experience different effects, evidenced by the user reviews on Cornbread Hemp’s website, which are overwhelmingly thankful for such a low-stakes version of an already low-stakes product.

Pros

  • USDA Certified Organic (view certification)
  • Full spectrum extract
  • Flower-Only extract
  • Mood brightening
  • Easy dosing
  • Responsive
  • Fast absorption
  • Zero aftertaste

Cons

  • Distillation makes for a lighter, less potent product
  • Not effective for sleep or rest support

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, increased focus, anxiety relief
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration, CBD newcomers with sensitive systems, folks who require a product that is truly unflavored
  • Not Good For: Folks in need of robust, potent, responsive effects

Best Water Soluble CBD Tinctures

The active compounds in cannabis are naturally hydrophobic oils, so in order to become water soluble, they require more post-production processing than a more straightforward CBD oil tincture.

CBD American Shaman Water Soluble CBD Oil

For users who require a seamless integration into liquid.

Available for $59.99 at CBD American Shaman

CBD American Shaman’s water soluble hemp CBD tincture simplifies ingestion for those with aversions to oils or otherwise sensitive palettes. Because of its formulation, it integrates seamlessly in liquid, although its slight lemon aftertaste does somewhat limit its culinary applications. Its super-low dose makes a great gateway CBD product, especially considering it’s just as easily delivered in a glass of water as under the tongue.

Read our CBD American Shaman review

Pros & Cons

The appeal of CBD American Shaman’s water soluble CBD tincture is how gracefully it blends into liquid, and while my personal preference is for a sublingual oil, this tincture played a very important role for a visiting family member during some very particular traveling drama. On an out-of-state visit over a holiday, a family member contracted pancreatitis and had to be hospitalized for an emergency surgery.

While they were in the hospital, their partner was experiencing severe anxiety. They were a thousand miles from home, dealing with an emergency healthcare situation without their established healthcare team. With CBD American Shaman’s water soluble tincture, I was able to dose this family member’s water bottle each morning, ensuring a daylong anxiety soother they didn’t have to integrate into their other daily medications, granted they remembered to hydrate. The bitter back end of the aftertaste is easily tempered with lemon, and a single dose ingested over the course of a few hours ensured long lasting anxiety relief.

Pros

  • Water soluble
  • Full spectrum extract
  • Fast absorption
  • Light lemon flavor
  • Responsive
  • Up to 10 times more bioavailable than oil
  • Relatively affordable
  • US Hemp Authority Certified

Cons

  • Low dose
  • Strong bitter aftertaste is difficult to integrate into food or drink
  • Conflicting messaging (tagged as both THC free and full spectrum <0.3% THC)
  • More expensive than regular CBD oil

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, increased focus, anxiety relief
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration, CBD newcomers with sensitive systems, folks who require a product that can be delivered seamlessly in liquid, anyone who requires a quick absorption with no residue
  • Not Good For: Lemon haters

Elixinol Everyday Rapid Reset CBD Liposome

For users averse to oil altogether.

CBD liposome product for fast absorption
Photo: Elixinol

Available for $49.99 at Elixinol

Elxinol’s broad spectrum, water-soluble CBD liposome operates with a pump rather than a dropper, making dosing super simpler. Measuring milligram markers on a miniature cannula can be a drag for users with compromised eyesight or fine motor skills, but Elixinol’s ergonomic pump action is far more accessible. And at 5mg a dose, it’s a great, low-stakes introduction to CBD for curious users.

Read our Elixinol review

Pros & Cons

Over the course of an emotionally chaotic holiday week, a non-cannabis-using family member who suffered from acute anxiety and panic attacks was able to medicate themselves effectively with small daily doses of Elixinol’s water soluble CBD liposome. This tincture was preferable for its sweeter front end and milder (but still heckin’ bitter) aftertaste. The citrusy essence limits the liquids it can seamlessly integrate with but sweet juices, flavored waters, smoothies and mixed mocktail moments are perfect opportunities for this product to shine.

Efficacy-wise, this tincture proffered long lasting relief from anxiety when taken at the onset of an anxiety attack or anxiety inducing situation, and though the aftertaste leaves something to be desired, the effects are undeniably potent and lasting. As part of a wellness routine, we found the effects beneficial for both morning and evening dosing

Pros

  • Water-soluble
  • Fast absorption
  • Broad Spectrum extract accessible to most users
  • Sweet citrus flavor
  • High bioavailability
  • Easy dosing
  • Beginner friendly

Cons

  • Low dose
  • Citrus flavor limits applications
  • Bitter aftertaste
  • Multiple pumps are required to deliver a full dose

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, anxiety relief
  • Good For: AM wellness routine integration, CBD newcomers with sensitive systems, folks who require seamless delivery, anyone who requires a quick absorption with no residue
  • Not Good For: Lemon haters

Best CBD Oils for Sleep

These CBD oils are formulated specifically for sleep and deep relaxation.

CBDfx CBD Oil Sleep Tincture

For sleep support and occasional attitude adjustments.

CBD oil for sleep and insomnia

Available for $69.99 at CBDfx

CBDfx’s sleep tincture features a harmonious balance of CBD and CBN that’s most suitable for evening use. The formulation is fast absorbing, easily dosed and its natural hemp flavor is mellow and palatable. The cannabinoid blend is straightforwardly relaxing, and since this product is CBDfx’s designated sleep tincture, its 5mg per dose CBN and melatonin inclusion is certainly supportive of restful sleep. CBDfx uses MCT coconut oil as its carrier oil.

Read our CBDfx review

Pros & Cons

CBDfx’s CBD Sleep tincture is an oil infusion that for sure relaxes, though the relaxation is potent enough to put a body to sleep when ingested with sleepy intentions. In this regard, this is an excellent addition to a nighttime wellness routine, though we didn’t find it best for day use.

During testing, instead of keeping CBDfx’s Sleep Tincture alongside my daily supplement stash box, I kept it on the boudoir shelf beside my other nighttime essentials. When employed sublingually as part of my PM routine, this tincture supported an easy transition to bed and restful sleep. In addition to PM wellness, my partner also grabbed this tincture a few times to quell bouts of gum/tooth/mouth pain and felt relief inside of 5 minutes.

I also found it effective at relieving mild bouts of anxiety. The CBN/CBD balance straddles the line between sleep-aid and anxiety extinguisher, and can be effective for both, especially for those who prefer nighttime-wellness routines.

Pros

  • Potent dose, effective for inducing deep sleep
  • Full spectrum extract
  • Fast absorption
  • Sweet citrus flavor
  • Easy dosing
  • Balanced cannabinoids for relaxation

Cons

  • Non-organic

Effects Felt During Testing

  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, relaxation, sleepiness, restful sleep, mouth pain relief
  • Good For: PM wellness routine integration, stress management, anxiety management, sleep support
  • Not Good For: Mornings, focus, alertness

How We Tested the Best CBD Oils and Tinctures

Different CBD oil brands compared side by side
After weeks of extensive first-hand testing, we picked the best CBD oils for a variety of purposes. Photo: Brianna Wheeler / CBD Oracle

Replacing a medicine cabinet’s worth of OTC medications with cannabis therapies is a goal of many pharmaceutically exhausted cannabis users. This vetted roundup of the best hemp oils might help jump start that effort.

Over two months, we auditioned over 3 dozen of the highest rated CBD oil tinctures in a wide range of potencies, spectrums and flavors. Our criteria for inclusion included credibility, lab testing by ISO/GMP certified facilities, customer reviews, quality of lab reports, concentration and balance of cannabinoids, in-house manufacturing (as opposed to private label) and price.

Once a product cleared those hurdles, we tested them as part of a morning wellness routine, a bedtime wellness routine, as well as for relief of anxiety, stress, superficial pain (cramps, post-workout recovery, minor oral pain), and chronic insomnia. Each product was tested for no less than 3 consecutive days by two experts, as well as family and friends whose medication needs outweighed their familiarity with therapeutic CBD.

Across the board, the best CBD oils delivered in most if not all of the categories we collected data in. What proved to define our preferences was texture, potency, and flavor. Regardless of potency, unflavored oils are rarely unflavored. Flavored oils, meanwhile, run the gamut from candy-sweet to straight-up skunky. Textures can vary from sheer and ephemeral to viscous and gooey. Potencies vary from 5mg doses to 50mg doses, as the ideal dose varies from person to person.

The data gathered for this best CBD oil list is meant to characterize each oil for not just its optimal use, but also its optimal user. Learn more about how we independently test CBD products.

Guide to Buying the Best CBD Oils

Woman is testing the quality of various CBD oil and tincture products at a booth
Photo: Bloom Farms

CBD extractions have been used as therapeutic compounds for almost all of history, establishing themselves as a cornerstone of natural plant medicine well before antibiotics and NSAIDs were just a pharmacy away.

Hemp CBD can be used to soothe topical traumas well as conditions like eczema and psoriasis, but more so, CBD is now regarded as a comprehensive holistic wellness supplement able to support immune health, cognitive function, stress reduction and an extensive assemblage of other therapeutic usages, including but not limited to chronic pain and insomnia relief.

Today’s hemp oils include complex botanical blends, curated terpene tableaus, manipulated cannabinoid profiles, culinary inspired flavors, and even state of the art extraction tech that makes them water soluble.

Many oils on the market today may appear similar in formulation and delivery, but cultivar selections, carrier oils, added terps and cleverly organized cannabinoids ensure that no two oils are exactly alike, and though they may treat the same issues, the effects can arrive in ways that some may find more attractive than others.

What is CBD Oil?

Man holding premium cannabidiol oil dropper

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants. CBD oil is created by extracting CBD from the hemp cannabis plant and diluting it with a carrier oil, often a coconut derived, medium chain triglyceride that cleanly absorbs sublingually. Learn more about CBD.

What Are the Different Types of CBD Oil?

Woman consuming a CBD oil tincture at the beach
Photo: Five

There are three different variations of CBD available to users:

  • Full Spectrum utilizes all available phytocannabinoids (including THC), flavonoids, phenols, sterols.
  • Broad Spectrum utilizes phytocannabinoids, flavonoids, phenols, sterols, and esters excluding THC.
  • Isolate is a highly manufactured version of CBD which eliminates all but the cannabidiol in the hemp plant.

Users should consider workplace drug testing/regulations, individual sensitivities, and personal preferences at least when deciding between full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolates.

What is Water-Soluble CBD Oil?

Water soluble CBD oils are produced with nanotech that alters the solubility of both the CBD extract and the carrier oil, enabling them to mix seamlessly with fluids. Traditional oils do not integrate with water.

What Does CBD Oil Help With?

Most recently CBD oil has been studied for its efficacy in potentially easing the symptoms of many familiar health conditions, not limited to stress, anxiety and neurological disorders. Furthermore, data suggests CBD benefits heart health, acts as an immune system modulator, and can relieve certain types of chronic pain and insomnia.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Take?

Woman showing how much CBD to dose for each serving
Photo: Bloom Farms

Starting with a lower dose (<10mg) will set users up to build up to a higher potency without running through their product by opting for a full-dropper dose each time they medicate. Those with less cannabis experience will likely require far smaller doses than folks with a more dialed-in relationship with hemp. Typically users can find their optimal dose with a week of daily use.

Does CBD Oil Get You High?

Man holding a CBD oil product that gets you high
Photo: Cookies

CBD oils don’t necessarily get their users “high” per se, but it should be noted that each person’s endocannabinoid system is unique. Full spectrum products may contain the same amount of THC as half a recreational gummy, which will certainly affect some users differently than others, though referring to the effect as a high is definitely hyperbole.

Broad spectrum and isolate products, however, will not engage any psychotropic effects, though their efficacy may be diminished without a more comprehensive entourage. Feels range from mild, sheer mood boosts to a complete extinguishing of stress, anxiety and even pain.

Will CBD Show Up in a Drug Test?

There is no taxonomic difference between cannabis and hemp; they are, scientifically speaking, the same plant. So, yes, full-spectrum CBD oils with even small amounts of THC could very well show up on a drug test for cannabis after a while. Users concerned about drug testing should do their own due diligence to ensure using any of these listed therapeutic-only products does not imperil their work position. Broad-spectrum oil and CBD isolates can be a safe option as they don’t contain any THC.

How Much Does CBD Oil Cost on Average?

CBD oils range from $0.02 per mg to $0.05 per mg on the affordable end (around $30 per 1oz bottle), though for a high quality, whole plant, full spectrum oil, the average cost is around $0.06 per mg (up to $150 per 1oz bottle).

How to Read a Product’s Lab Report?

A CBD product’s COA (certificate of analysis) will inform users of the product’s total cannabinoid percentage, the ratio of cannabinoids used, the amount of THC present, the percentage of terpenes and which are dominant, as well as testing results for pesticides, residual solvents, and heavy metals. Learn more about third-party lab reports.

Final Thoughts

The best CBD oil tinctures can be invaluable tools in a daily wellness routine. A full spectrum of cannabinoids can support a healthy immune response, normalize sleep patterns, boost circulatory and cardiac health and in some cases, even protect against/medicare chronic conditions like diabetes, insomnia or even cancer. Even broad spectrum and isolate variations of the cannabinoid cannabidiol can have profound long term effects on a user’s health.

The best hemp CBD oils do more than round out a daily supplement routine; CBD oils can support physical recovery, short term pain relief, and extinguish bouts of unmanageable stress and/or anxiety. Across the board, the effects we encountered when auditioning the many CBD oils on our curated roster were in line with what we as users had come to expect from any high quality CBD oil, be it formulated from isolate, full or broad spectrum extract.

Daily use led to leveled moods and increased focus, and in many cases, improved sleep. Occasional use for issues such as anxiety soothing or pain relieving nearly always delivered at least adequate results. In the end, each CBD oil reviewed on this list could be considered the best CBD oil, what separates these products are totally subjective, highly specific personal preferences for flavor, texture, price and potency.

When exploring what may or may not constitute the best CBD oil for their needs, we encourage users to consider not only their budget, but also what appeals to each of their senses, because there really is a formulation out there for each and every potential patient – if their willing to do a bit of searching.
