How We Tested the CBD E-Liquids

Testing makes or breaks a list like this. While some CBD vape juice flavors might look good on paper, the reality of the situation is sometimes different. Maybe the flavor doesn’t come through as much as you were expecting, maybe the balance of components is off, and maybe the CBD doesn’t have as much impact as the strength suggests it should. That’s why the choices on this list were based on extensive, unbiased first-hand testing.

After putting together a big list of the options that are out there, especially the most recommended options, we set about comparing them. This includes taking into account the mg/ml of CBD, the cost per mg of CBD, and a general investigation into how transparent the company is with things like lab reports.

Once we’d settled on a shortlist of 15 different CBD e-liquids, we got a bottle of each and put them to the vape test. After spending at least a day vaping each, we eventually settled on the finalists. Guide to Buying the Best CBD E-Juice

If you’re interested in picking up some CBD vape juice but might want to go beyond the options above, learning the basics about choosing good CBD e-juice is a crucial step. In particular, it’s good to know what to look for and what to avoid when you’re shopping, how long a bottle is likely to last and how to work out things like the strength you’ll need. Luckily, this is all quite straightforward once you’ve covered the basics.

What to Look For

• Total CBD: One of the most important things to establish is the total amount of CBD in the e-liquid. This tells you how much you get in each ml of e-juice (simply divide the total by the number of ml in the bottle). If you know roughly how much CBD you need per day, you can use this as a basis for your calculations.
• PG/VG ratio: The amount of VG to PG is an important thing to check. Generally, higher PG levels will work better with simpler tank systems, and carry flavor better, but they can be harsher on your throat. Higher VG makes smoother vapor and bigger clouds, but thickens the mixture, so you’ll need a sub ohm tank or similar to vape it well.
• CBD isolate? Broad spectrum? Most CBD vape juice is what’s known as “isolate.” This just means that the only thing you get is CBD, with no extra cannabinoids in the mix. “Broad-spectrum” extractions include other cannabinoids too. Generally the amounts of these are lower than the amount of CBD, but the others complement the CBD through the “entourage effect.” Isolate is good, but if you want more than just CBD, broad spectrum is a great choice. THC is also included in “full spectrum” extractions.
• Terpenes or other flavors: Although terpene-flavored CBD vape juices aren’t as common as you might expect, there are options that produce a cannabis or hemp-like flavor by incorporating them. If you want something more “flavored” – tasting like fruits, desserts or anything like that – you should go for a non-terpene CBD e-juice.
• Source of the hemp: After the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, farmers in the US have to follow safety guidelines when producing their hemp. This makes US-grown hemp a great option, but other options (like European) are also good. The main thing is that you should be able to find out easily – if you can’t see where it’s from, choose another juice.
• Lab reports/COAs: The company you buy from should have lab reports available to check. While testing for cannabinoids to ensure purity and labeling accuracy is good, the best reports also include safety tests (for things like residual solvents or pesticides).
• Reputation: It’s best to check around online before you buy CBD vape juice from a company. Ideally, choose a company with a good reputation, including both positive reviews of the product and positive things about the company themselves. If a company has a lot of people complaining, there is probably a reason behind it.

Things to Avoid

• MCT or other oils: CBD vape “oil” is a misnomer. You should never vape actual oil, because it can lead to lung issues or even conditions like lipoid pneumonia. So your CBD vape juice shouldn’t contain MCT, coconut oil or any other oils or fats. PG and VG aren’t perfect, but they don’t lead to this type of issue when inhaled.
• Unknown companies: A company nobody has heard of might be a hidden gem, but they probably aren’t. If you can’t find much about them online, you’d be better off choosing a company with a good track record.
• No lab report/COA: If there’s no lab report, you can’t confirm that what you’re buying is what they’re claiming, and so any company without them should be avoided.

Can You Vape CBD Oil?

CBD oil – meaning, a tincture of CBD – is not intended for vaping. CBD vape juice usually contains VG (vegetable glycerin) and PG (propylene glycol), because these are easy to vaporize and assumed to be reasonably safe to inhale.

The key difference is that CBD oil uses oil or fats as a carrier for the CBD. If you inhale something with fats and oils, it can cause lipoid pneumonia and other lung issues. In short, the long-chained molecules get caught up in the networks of your airways and cause trouble, especially as they accumulate. Although some companies may use coconut oil or MCT in a CBD e-juice, you should not use them – unfortunately the companies aren’t always well-informed.

So for CBD oil vs. CBD vape juice, there are key characteristics of each:

CBD Oil

• Is intended for sublingual (under the tongue) or oral use
• Contains MCT, coconut oil or usually other fats/oils
• Is not suitable to inhale
• Often has a hemp-like flavor from terpenes

CBD Vape Juice

• Uses PG and VG
• Doesn’t contain any fats, just the carriers, CBD and flavors
• No major issues for inhalation
• Usually flavored like fruit or dessert
• Can also be used as a tincture (although it isn’t usually that pleasant)

How Does CBD Vape Juice Make You Feel?

CBD vape juice can have varying effects, depending on the dose, if there are other cannabinoids present and your personal reaction to CBD. That said, if you have some CBD e-liquid, it will probably just contain CBD and the most common effects are:

• Relaxation
• Comfort
• Reduced anxiety and stress
• Pain relief
• Mood improvement
• Tiredness/sleepiness (in high doses)
• Alertness (in low doses)

Of course, this is just a list of generic effects – your subjective experience of it may differ. For example, the most notable effect for me is the relaxation, like an undercurrent of calm sticking with me after vaping. But if you’re experiencing pain, for example, the pain relief will probably be the biggest difference you notice.

How Long Does CBD Vape Juice Last in Your System?

You might be wondering about two (related) things here: how long do the effects of CBD vape juice last, and how long will the CBD be detectable in my system?

The effects of CBD last for between one and six hours, depending on the dose you take, your specific physiology and the method you used to consume it. Vaping is generally faster-acting and quicker to end, so you can expect to feel the effects within ten minutes (as little as a few minutes) and it to last for a few hours.

For how long it will be detectable in your system, Vaping360 points out the differences between half lives between oral use (a tincture or capsule, say) and for inhaled aerosols. Research suggests that the half life for aerosols is about an hour and a half (technically between 1 and 2.4 hours), and it takes 5.5 half lives for something to clear your system. This means it takes between 6 and 12 hours for CBD to completely leave your system. However, this could easily be longer if you consume regularly or large amounts.

How Much CBD Can You Vape Per Day?

There are again two separate issues here: firstly, what’s the recommended daily dosage of CBD, and secondly, how much can you vape safely?

In theory, you can vape at least up to 1,500 mg of CBD per day without issues. The number for you might be higher than this, or you might start to get some unpleasant symptoms at much lower doses than this. The most common symptoms of taking too much CBD are dry mouth, nausea, stomach issues like diarrhea, drowsiness and disorientation or dizziness.

This isn’t really likely to happen though. Firstly – and most importantly – any generally recommended dose of CBD will be much lower than this. Most people start on between 20 and 40 mg per day, and increase gradually from there as needed. Secondly, actually vaping that much CBD per day would be a challenge: you would have to get through a bottle and a half of 1,000 mg e-liquid, likely about 90 ml of CBD e-juice.

How Much CBD E-Liquid Should You Take Per Day?

The above recommendation of 20 to 40 mg per day to start is good. Then increase as needed if you feel you need more after a week. Use your own judgment, but it’s better to increase slowly if you’re going above 40 mg – by 5 mg a week or so.

This does vary, though, depending on your metabolism, the condition you’re treating and tons of other factors. If you have anxiety or sleep issues, for instance, a higher dose has been shown to be effective, but there isn’t enough evidence to settle on a precise number. Most real-life CBD surveys show that higher daily doses are fairly rare: in one example, 55% of CBD users took less than 50 mg per day.

What Strength CBD Vape Juice Should I Get?

Choosing a CBD e-juice strength seems like it would be pretty straightforward, but you need to take bottle size into account. Unfortunately, most CBD vape juice sellers list the total amount in the bottle without a breakdown in terms of mg per ml or a percentage. Simply put: a 1000 mg bottle of CBD e-liquid means 33.3 mg/ml if it’s a 30 ml bottle and 16.6 mg/ml if it’s a 60 ml bottle.

You need to think about this and how much you want to actually vape each day to make your decision. For a 30 mg daily dose, the 1000 mg in a 30 ml bottle option would basically mean vaping 1 ml per day. For the 60 ml bottle it would take 2 ml to get the same dose.

Practically, you can base this decision on the size of your tank. If you have a 2 ml tank, getting a 1000 mg / 60 ml is OK, because you can get a reasonable dose if you get through a tank a day. But if you want to vape less – which is a good idea, strictly speaking – you could go to 1000 mg / 30 ml (or, equivalently, 2000 mg / 60 ml) to get the same amount of CBD from half a tank.

Generally, for a 30 ml bottle, up to 300 mg can be considered low potency, up to 600 mg as average potency and 1,000 mg or more a high potency. 

Are There Any CBD Vape Juices With Nicotine?

Despite both nicotine and CBD e-liquid being very common and easy to find, there aren’t really commercially-available hemp vape juice that combine the two. However, you can certainly do this yourself if you want to. Nicotine shots are pretty common in the US/EU, and there’s nothing to stop you from adding one to your CBD e-juice. Some people do recommend against it (since the effects are contrary to each other), but overall there is no strong reason beyond preference to avoid doing it.

Can You Make Your Own CBD Vape Juice at Home?

You can easily make your own DIY CBD vape juice at home, but you’ll need to gather some ingredients first. You’ll need:

• Propylene glycol (PG)
• Vegetable glycerin (VG)
• CBD isolate (≥99% pure)
• Flavorings (terpene based or vape juice flavors)
• Blunt-tipped syringe
• Accurate scale (down to 0.01 or 0.001)
• 30 ml (or 60 ml) empty bottle

Most of these things can be found at vaping stores online, although you may need to find somewhere else for the scale and the CBD isolate. Isolate is important because you can’t mix oils into something you’ll be vaping.

The process is pretty straightforward:

• Measure out either 500 or 1000 mg (0.5 to 1 g) of CBD isolate. This depends on the strength you want the final liquid to be.
• Add 15 ml of PG and mix. CBD isn’t soluble in VG, so you need to mix thoroughly with PG first before combining. You want it to be mixed well enough that you can’t see crystals in the mix anymore.
• Add 12 ml of VG, mixing well again.
• Choose whichever flavorings sound good to you and add 3 ml of them to the liquid, before giving it a final mix.

You can adjust most of this to suit your needs. For example, a 50/50 PG/VG mix works quite well, but this means you’d need to add the flavorings (usually PG-based), 12 ml of PG and 15 ml of VG. If you make the VG percentage much higher than that, you might have issues with the CBD dissolving properly, and it won’t work as well with simpler tanks. However, it can work if you have a sub ohm tank or anything with efficient wicking.

Can You Put CBD Tincture in Vape Juice?

CBD tincture is an oil, and so – despite misleading phrases like “CBD vape oil” – you can’t safely vaporize it. This is why in the instructions above you need isolate: pre-made CBD oil will contain something you can’t vape. If you mix the CBD tincture with vape juice, it might technically “work” depending on the precise amounts, but it still isn’t a good idea.

How Much Does CBD Vape Juice Cost?

The cost of CBD vape juice is pretty variable, but you can expect to pay anything from 2 to 10 cents per mg of CBD. In practice, this means that a 500 mg bottle of CBD e-liquid will likely cost about $20, although it could be as high as $50. In most cases, though, when you find CBD vape juice with a higher price per mg, it’s more that the amount of CBD per bottle is low rather than the bottle cost being high.

As an average, 500 mg of CBD in a 30 ml bottle will probably cost around $25 to $30.

Conclusion

CBD vape juice is getting more and more common as people grow to accept CBD, but the sheer volume of competition makes finding a good one more challenging. The good news is that most of the options out there today are pretty good, customers now expect lab reports (and so companies provide them) and juices crop up to meet most preferences.
