Review

Packaging. Nu-X brings a sleek, modern and simple look to their packaging as well as providing a fairly detailed, transparent lab report to their consumers.

Bud quality. They have great intentions of preserving their industrial hemp-derived CBG flower by implementing the nitrogen-sealed flap underneath the lid, however, to my disappointment the buds appeared to be slightly dry, crunchy and exuded chamomile, sugary aroma that was very flat. The buds were poorly trimmed, and displayed a lot of unnecessary sugar/fan leaf, making it look very unappealing.

Positive experience. Aside from that though, the mental and bodily effects from my smoke session trumped those negative observations and made for a delightful and positive experience. And for a very modest price point of only $20 an eighth (and you get another one free with their current promotion), you really can’t go wrong!

Effects. Upon exploring Nu-X’s White Whale CBG strain in the early morning, I was already afflicted with slight stomach nausea. This was probably due to having very little sleep the night before and not having anything to eat. I rolled up a single wide joint, hoping to eliminate or at least relieve the disruption of my physical ailment. My nausea subsided about 20 minutes or so post-session, and I found myself feeling recalibrated.

CBG flower buds quality

Uplifting and euphoric. I was very impressed with the mental effects that appeared too, considering the potency level of White Whale being at 11% CBG. I felt lucid and uplifted, with a slight attachment of euphoria. I also found myself unnecessarily happy and cheerful, and experiencing many quick, positive thoughts – despite feeling physically crappy just moments before. I found moments of laughter and giggles too, which was a nice little add-on to my experience. Although the effects didn’t last long, I was able to change my morning around with a much needed, positive spin. This is a perfect strain for those who want to start their day off right!

Review

Fluffy buds. Green Unicorn Farms White CBG strain would definitely make a fantastic addition to your stash box with its fluffy, robust buds that are beautifully dusted with trichomes.

Aromatic. Upon opening the bag, my nose and face were instantly blasted with a heavy, sweet, ice cream like aroma with a slight pinch of gas and pine – which was so delightful, compared to the other CBG brands I’ve smelled.

White CBG flower strain

Beautiful nugs. The buds are beyond visually appealing, and definitely have no trouble showing off against their flower competitors in this review. The medium-large sized buds were uniform and nicely trimmed and held a pretty decent humidity. The combination of light and medium green hues with the golden orange pistils nudging through makes for an eye-catching moment when taken out of the package.

Effects. Before my smoke session with White CBG, I rolled up a single wide joint shortly after enjoying a mid-afternoon smoothie on my patio, really looking for some motivation to go to work (and not feel anxious about going, either). A few puffs later, I could taste a very nutty flavor – one that I have found pretty common in a lot of the CBG strains I’ve tested. Unfortunately though, it was a little harsh on my throat, which is always a turn off for me while smoking. Almost instantly I could feel the effects kick in, that of which I felt very relaxed and chilled out. I could also feel my eyes shrink a little tighter, and felt super focused and ready to take on whatever work had to throw at me that day.

Green Unicorn Farms CBG flower quality

Low price. With that said, I would highly recommend this CBG strain to anyone who might be feeling a little bit anxious or restless, or if you’re looking for a nice evening smoke or something to take the edge off after a long day. The price point is pretty affordable too – at $25/3.5g or $40/7g. So whether you want to add a pinch or bulk to your stash, Green Unicorn Farms is definitely the way to go!

Strongest CBG Flower: CBD American Shaman CBG John Snow

CBD American Shaman CBG flower review
CBD American Shaman John Snow CBG. Photo: Zola Costa/CBD Oracle

Available for $29.99 from CBD American Shaman

Securing the third spot for the best CBG flower and shy just a hair for second place, CBD American Shaman John Snow CBG strain comes through with their strong potency, and delectable, high quality flavor profiles of creamy, sweet chocolate that will leave you wanting more. Although their bud quality is a little bit on the lower scale, the bodily and mental effects that come along after using this strain are second to none and should absolutely be considered if you’re looking for something quick, potent, and fast-acting.

Pros

  • Aromatic flavor profile
  • High potency level
  • Strong, cerebral buzz
  • Sustainable glass packaging
  • US Hemp Authority certified

Cons

  • Small buds
  • Pricier than other flowers tested
  • No COA for pesticides, metals, or solvents
  • Tested for potency – not tested for solvents, pesticides and metals (see COA)

Effects

  • Effects felt: Relaxed, Calm, Focused
  • Best for: Any Time Use, Tasks Requiring Focus, Restlessness
  • Not good for: High Energy Activities (i.e. Sports/Outdoors)

Review

Strong potency. CBD American Shaman’s John Snow is a highly potent, CBG rich strain that packs an absolute punch in the flavor category, allowing users to not only have a delectable experience on the palate, but strong mental and bodily effects as well. Coming in at a whopping 20.7% potency level, it is the highest among its six remaining competitors.

John Snow CBG flower strain

Soft, sugary aroma. I tested this strain in the evening, feeling a bit tired after my day but not completely exhausted. I rolled up a nice single wide joint after dinner. Upon opening the jar, I was welcomed with a soft, sugary aroma with slight notes that were herbal and earthy.

Small buds. One downfall of this CBG flower was the extremely tiny buds – they were no bigger than the size of a dime and there were probably about 20-25 of them. However, I was visually pleased by the use of the glass jar and the informative label with the strain name, potency level, and dry weight, along with the seal and peel flap underneath the lid of the jar.

Strong, cerebral buzz. Alongside the physical aesthetics of this flower was a highly ranked bodily and mental experience post consumption. The effects came on heavily and I felt a very strong cerebral buzz, to the point where I kind of felt stoned similar to a THC Hybrid strain. It wasn’t overpowering though – I was able to be in full control and felt super relaxed both in my brain and body. With its high potency level, this strain was definitely the most effective and is recommended for those who need a quick calming tool from stress and anxiety, or even a sleep aid.

Pricey. It is the priciest of all the CBG flower strains I tested at $29.99 for an eighth, but definitely worth the investment if you’re looking for something that is super effective!

Best Looking Buds: Botany Farms The White CBG Flower

Botany Farms CBG flower review
Botany Farms CBG flower. Photo: Zola Costa/CBD Oracle

Available for $25 from Botany Farms

“The White” CBG flower and pre-roll from Botany Farms helped keep my focus up and clear while trying to mitigate the uncomfortable physical effects of anxiety. It allowed me to bounce back from having a clouded head and vision and propelled me into a state of focus and uplift. From there, I was easily able to get my office work done without feeling agitated or fidgety at my desk for long periods of time.

Pros

  • Mood support
  • Hand trimmed, dense buds
  • Detailed, beautiful packaging
  • 100% Organic flower

Cons

  • Dry buds
  • Short lasting effects
  • Lack of flavor
  • Tested for potency – not tested for solvents, pesticides and metals (see COA)

Effects

  • Effects felt: Uplifted, Visual and Mental Clarity, Relaxed, Focused
  • Best for: Morning and Afternoon, Focus, Brain Fog
  • Not good for: Sleep Support

Review

Thoughtful packaging. Upon examining Botany Farms CBG flower packaging, I was immediately impressed with their attention to aesthetic detail and useful product labeling. This included cannabinoid content percentage, strain name, strain type, and the expected aromas and flavors. They also get some brownie points for having a freshness seal under the lid and a Boveda humidity pack inside the jar itself. However, they could improve on their 1-gram pre-roll packaging by keeping it more secure inside the tube. Upon opening, I found lots of the milled flower had escaped from the cone, which was likely due to being bumped around during its travels.

Botany Farms CBG preroll joint

Amazing buds. Botany Farms CBG flower sticks out greatly to its competitors by showing off its beautifully structured buds. You can tell they put a lot of time and attention into crafting their buds as they were trimmed ever so neatly and were very uniform and dense. A huge kudos from me – they are 100% the most aesthetically pleasing out of all the CBG flower I tested for this review. It’s really refreshing to see companies take pride in every part of their production process, which is another reason why I really appreciate small craft cannabis companies.

Close-up photo of Botany Farms CBG flower

Uplifted and relaxed. Before consuming The White CBG, I was feeling slight anxiety in my stomach and experiencing brain fog. I was also having a hard time concentrating and could feel myself getting a little bit restless. I rolled a single wide joint (close to 0.3g) and consumed it on a full stomach in the late afternoon. I noticed that after my session, the nervous gut feeling subsided, as well as the brain fog. I physically felt uplifted in my head, and my body was feeling more relaxed. My vision became more clear and my mental clarity was stable. Because of this, I was able to concentrate better and complete my work task at hand without trouble.

Short lasting effects. Due to its lower potency of 11%, the effects did not last very long for me – only about 20-25 minutes or so. But if you need a quick pick-me-up or mental boost, this strain could definitely be for you.

Available for $20 from The Brothers Apothecary

Oregon-based brothers Jesse and Shane from The Brothers Apothecary show their passion for cannabis by providing users with products that claim to be USDA certified organic, top quality, and derived from full-spectrum hemp. Their White Whale CBG strain is a great choice for those who are looking for a chance to wind down, while still being able to focus and feel uplifted. This small-batch, hand-crafted brand is one that you should definitely try, because this medium potency, creamy flavored strain will leave you feeling content and blissed out!

Pros

  • Medium potency
  • USDA Organic
  • Grown in Oregon
  • Produced by a small family business
  • Sustainable packaging

Cons

  • Small buds
  • Slightly dry
  • Inconsistent COA with packaging label
  • Tested for potency – not tested for pesticides and metals (see COA)

Effects

  • Effects felt: Mental Clarity, Bliss, Happiness, Contentment
  • Best for: Relaxing, Working
  • Not good for: Nothing to Report After Testing

Review

Craft cannabis. When it comes to small-batch craft companies, I typically find myself heavily appreciating the love, care, and passion that comes from those who are behind the scenes and their processes from seed to shelf. And with The Brothers Apothecary, it is no doubt that they are one of those brands who prove that.

Sustainable packaging. What’s great about them is their sustainable packaging with the glass jars that are labeled ever so neatly and informatively with CBG, CBGA, and THCA content percentages. They also provide a bonus of a two-way humidity pack in the jar to preserve the flower’s freshness and terpene content. And being considered a craft cannabis company, their price point of only $20 for 3.5 grams is such a steal and well worth the buy!

Herbal aroma. Upon opening the jar, I was pleasantly greeted by a strong, sweet and herbal aroma (also the most pleasant aroma next to Green Unicorn Farms CBG flower). And as with every other brand tested in this review, I busted and rolled up a single wide joint (about 0.3g). Right away, an oily ring was visible around the cherry, which provided for an even and consistent burn right to the end of my session.

Creamy notes. In the flavor department, nutty and creamy notes sat at the back of my throat and on my tongue. I had also just woken up from a quick early evening power nap, so my head and brain were feeling a bit clouded and groggy.

Mental clarity, bliss. But these buds coming in at 15.2% CBG managed to quickly reduce the brain fog and brought me mental clarity along with feelings of contentment and bliss. So if you’re looking for something to eliminate lethargy and sluggishness, this White Whale strain is definitely up your alley!

Best for Daytime: Cannaflower White CBG Flower

CBG rich cannabis sativa flower
Cannaflower Sativa CBG flower strain. Photo: Zola Costa/CBD Oracle

Available for $27.95 from Cannaflower

This organically grown CBG rich strain is a low-medium potency product that will certainly give you a Sativa dominant boost by activating your brain and giving you the chance to help relieve any sort of brain fog or mental distractions. Cannaflower takes pride in every step of their process line and it certainly shows with their tightly structured buds and their fast-acting effects post-consumption. However, it’s not recommended for users who need long-lasting results and those who are flavor/aroma activists.

Pros

  • Heightened focus
  • Bud structure
  • Informative packaging label

Cons

  • Dry buds
  • Lack of aroma
  • Poor packaging design
  • Outdated lab report
  • Tested for potency – not tested for pesticides and metals (see COA)

Effects

  • Effects felt: Cerebral Relief, Visual Clarity, Focused
  • Best for: Brain Fog, Day Time
  • Not good for: Sleep Support

Review

Dense buds. Cannaflower’s White CBG strain is claimed to be a premium quality cultivar that is grown in organic soil and is handled with care and precision from seed to doorstep. They take pride in their slow drying and hand trimming process, which I can also vouch for as the buds I received were tightly kept and neatly presented. Although small in stature, they were also dense and you could tell the trichomes were preserved. However, I think Cannaflower could slightly improve on their packaging and on the retention of the humidity/moisture in the buds.

Cannaflower CBG flower for calming effects

Packaging. They place such a high focus on the fact that their flowers are cured in cellared glass jars, but I think it would be worth an investment to extend that process and keep their flowers in glass jars rather than the open-sided, transparent mylar bags. This way, the products aren’t exposed to any harsh light during shipping.

Earthy, lemony aromas. I consumed Cannaflower’s White CBG in the early afternoon and did not eat any food prior to my smoke session. I also experienced some brain fog at the time, more than likely because I woke up later that day. I sparked up a single wide joint and picked up on a strange nutty flavor, with earthy and lemony aromas.

Cerebral boost. About 10 minutes later, I felt the slight effects kicking in, giving me a nice energizing, cerebral boost that reduced my brain fog and heightened my mental focus. This CBG flower is an enjoyable product for those who love a nice daytime smoke and a quick brain boost, a low-medium potency level, and no psychoactive effects.

Most Affordable: Plain Jane CBG Flower

Plain Jane dried CBG flower
Plain Jane CBG flower. Photo: Zola Costa/CBD Oracle

Available for $14.99 from Plain Jane

There’s not much to write home about Plain Jane’s CBG dried flower, unless you’re looking for minimal, short-lasting bodily and mental effects. It’s a product that won’t break your wallet, but on the other hand, I don’t think it makes up for its extremely poor flavor and bud quality. But hey, you win some, you lose some.

Pros

  • Mental and cerebral relief
  • Visually appealing and bold packaging
  • Low price point
  • Bulk options available

Cons

  • Lack of COA information
  • Dry buds
  • Weak flavor
  • Not tested for pesticides and heavy metals (see COA)

Effects

  • Effects felt: Cerebral Buzz, Euphoria
  • Best for: Relaxing
  • Not good for: Quality Terpene and Flavor Activists

Review

Lab testing. Plain Jane secured a low score due to its lack of transparency and testing for terpenes, pesticides, solvents, and metals. The lab report only tests for cannabinoid levels which is vague and gives me very little information to understand exactly what it is I’m consuming and if it’s even a clean product from seed to shelf.

Poor bud quality. Other reasons for low scoring are the CBG flower’s bud quality and lack of flavor. The 1 gram that I received was completely botched and only a small nugget was visible that barely clung onto a long stem. It was super disappointing to see the gram look like it was already pre-milled. Not only that, the bud was really dry and turned to dust instantly when rubbed between my fingers. After rolling into a single wide joint, I was extremely let down by its foul flavor of burnt tasting grass that left a bitter, dry aftertaste on my tongue.

Plain Jane CBG flower in testing

Euphoric buzz. Overall, I was not satisfied with the Plain Jane CBG flower but will give small props to the product’s effectiveness, to which I found a slight cerebral and euphoric buzz that relieved some headache pain that I experienced earlier on in the evening. And even with the low price point of $6 for a gram, I would still recommend investing your stash funds elsewhere.

How We Tested the CBG Flower Strains

Comparison of best CBG flower products
We tested and compared the most popular CBG flower products to pick the best options for uplifting effects. Photo: Zola Costa/CBD Oracle

I’ve invested the last two months researching, testing, and reviewing the best CBG flower products available to buy online, and ranked the best brands with firm and critical grading criteria.

Over 18 companies were considered in the testing and evaluation of the most popular CBG flower products on the market to curate this “best of” list. A smaller list of seven companies made their way through and were independently tested and ranked.

Best CBG flower products compared
Independent testing of the best CBG flower products available. Photo: Zola Costa/CBD Oracle

The main criteria used for testing the best CBG flower was when I was feeling mentally or physically anxious, experiencing unstable moods, or just feeling off that day. I also tested the CBG flower strains when I had physical symptoms such as a headache, nausea, or restlessness. From there, the products were tested in numerical order of their potency level: starting with testing the lowest percentage of CBG first, and the highest at the end.

Before every CBG flower was tested, I rolled up a single wide joint, which with a filter comes up to around 0.3 gram. I considered and recorded how I felt physically and mentally before and after smoking a joint. I also made notes of aromas pre-consumption and flavors during consumption. I closely inspected the oil rings on the joint itself, speculating if there were any dry spots and areas susceptible to “canoeing” or inconsistent burning at the end while smoking.

The criteria and numerical scoring used for this list were adopted from CBD Oracle and focused on the effectiveness of each product, the flower quality and the smells and flavors of each, the packaging, and testing results for potency, pesticides, solvents, and heavy metals.

What is CBG flower?

CBG flower is composed of dried buds derived from hemp plants that are rich in cannabigerol. When CBG flower is consumed, it provides users with therapeutic effects that are non-intoxicating and don’t provide an intense psychoactive reaction.

Best-rated CBG flower strains

How much CBG do you need to feel the effects?

Anyone who consumes CBG flower should know that their tolerance level will be different from one person to the next, and that they will experience the effects according to varying dosage levels. Using myself as an example, I was able to feel the effects for a moderate period of time by rolling up 0.3 grams of CBG flower. If you find yourself to have a higher tolerance level or are looking for effects to last much longer, you can increase the dosage and use about 0.5-1 gram or more.

What are the effects of CBG flower?

While everyone reacts differently to the cannabis plant and its therapeutic cannabinoids, my experience with CBG flower has provided some positive effects both mentally and physically. Here is a list of effects that I felt after testing the CBG flower products in this review:

  • Euphoria
  • Uplift
  • Visual/Mental Clarity
  • Positivity
  • Cheerfulness
  • Contentment
  • Happiness
  • Relaxation
  • Calm
  • Focus

Does CBG flower get you high?

CBG flower is a non-psychoactive product that does not create the intoxicating effects that THC would. So no, you don’t get “high”. However, on my personal journey with CBG flower, I experienced a very mild, euphoric buzz in both my head and body. But keep in mind that the potency level was high (20% CBG), and that not everyone will experience this same effect.

How much does CBG flower cost on average?

Companies that sell CBG flower give consumers the chance to buy in small quantities like 1 or 3.5 grams all the way up to half a pound or 226 grams. The price of CBG flower can range from $5-$11 per gram, but on average it costs around $6-$8 per gram.

What are some popular CBG flower strains?

Although there aren’t as many CBG rich strains as there are say THC or CBD, there are still a few popular strains to look out for:

  • The White
  • White Whale
  • White CBG
  • John Snow
  • White Widow
  • Jack Frost
  • Frosted Cake CBG
  • Lemon Cream Diesel
  • Cosmic Diesel

Choosing the best CBG flower; Final thoughts

CBG flower products rich in Cannabigerol
Selection of the most effective CBG flower brands. Photo: Zola Costa/CBD Oracle

Reviewing the best CBG flower and testing different strains from all over the U.S. has solidified my thoughts that there are so many different uses for cannabis – way beyond chasing a buzz or feeling high. And while CBG is still a cannabinoid that has only been researched for a short period of time, it allows users to toy around with the idea that there’s a chance of gaining more concrete evidence and proof that CBG flower can help treat those who suffer from chronic and acute health conditions. With over one hundred cannabinoids detected and produced by the cannabis plant, CBG and its founded healing properties are just hitting the tip of the iceberg in the cannabis industry across North America.
