Compared to other CBD brands, Toast has a fairly tight lineup of hemp-derived CBD products. With a selective menu of oil-based tinctures, flower, chocolates, and pet products, it’s refreshing to see a brand narrow its focus instead of pursuing every product category under the sun.

After trying the Cold-Pressed CBD Oils and Chocolate Supplements, I can report that Toast’s chocolates are unique but their CBD oils are fairly run-of-the-mill in terms of flavor, price, and potency.

While tinctures make a lot of sense for both consumers and brands (they’re easy to administer, simple to make, familiar to most people, etc.), they’re also surprisingly tricky to get right. For example, do you keep the formula simple, fully exposing the raw, herbal flavors of the plant? Or do you add other ingredients to mask those flavors and hopefully make it more broadly appealing? Toast has gone the latter route with their citrus-blended oils and while I can’t say I’m the biggest fan, I can see them appealing to people who are decidedly against weedy aftertastes.

Highlights
You are probably going to like reading this Toast review if you’re looking for a boldly citrus tincture or are overwhelmed by the CBD chocolate options out there. With a limited product selection and a few potency options to choose from, Toast actually makes it pretty easy to pull the trigger on that shopping cart. And while plenty of brands claim their products are clean, triple-tested, and sourced from only the best farms, I get the sense Toast lives up to those claims—even to the detriment of the flavors. With a brand aesthetic that straddles the old-school stoner days and maximalist modern sensibilities, this brand is a funky one worth considering.

Editor’s Pick

  • Toast’s Fine & Raw chocolates were my favorite of the lineup because they’re the most palatable. Flavor-wise, they’re far from gourmet, but the texture is at least interesting. For $12 and 100mg of CBD per chocolate square, I’m willing to overlook some packaging and flavor inadequacies.

Toast CBD Chocolate Supplement

At 100mg of CBD per chocolate square, these edibles provide the full bang for your buck. To be clear, they also have a less potent, 20mg option for $7, but why shortchange yourself when you can get five times the amount of CBD for just $5 more? After all, this is CBD we’re talking about. Unlike THC edibles, you don’t need to worry about finding yourself in a fetal position for hours if you overdo it.

With the price-to-potency math in my favor, I was already primed to like Toast’s chocolates from the jump. I took my first bite before heading out to run some errands and a bunch of thoughts ran through my head: It’s melting in my mouth! But it’s also kind of chalky? The texture threw me, but I also kind of appreciated that it was anything but a CBD-infused Dove knock-off.

The chocolate flavor was strong and bitter just the way I like it with subtle notes of coffee and mahogany. An hour later, in peak errand mode, I was feeling noticeably chill but also energized, which leads me to believe there was a dose of cocoa caffeine to thank. Overall, it was a pleasant if not unusual experience—which doesn’t always happen with hemp CBD products you can buy online.

Highlights

If affordable effectiveness is what you’re after and high-quality flavor profiles are low on your priority list, these chocolates should fit the bill. I don’t think it’s redundant to point out that at 100mg per $12 chocolate, it’s an affordable, efficient way to meet your high-dose needs. The only people I feel the need to warn are drugstore candy aficionados who love a good sugar rush. These are on the opposite side of the sugary chocolate spectrum, which I appreciate but acknowledge might not please everyone.

Toast CBD Oil: Orange

Like I said at the top of this review, tinctures are hard to get right for everyone. I personally enjoy a potently herbal brew that screams hemp or cannabis plant, but I might be in the minority with that preference. As a result, I try to keep an open mind when it comes to flavored CBD oils. I’m mildly allergic to cinnamon, so it takes a lot of shoring up my mental fortitude to test those, but with citrus-infused oils, my approach is typically: what’s the worst that could happen? I don’t like it? That, my friends, is precisely what happened in this case.

I may not have liked the intensely orange-peel flavor of this tincture, but I don’t want to knock it for anyone who does like a hefty dose of zest with their morning sip of CBD. I can appreciate that it definitely tastes natural and not artificial and that no adverse side effects (I’m mostly talking headaches) descended on me after trying this tincture. I felt mostly pleasant and balanced, which isn’t always my resting state and the aftertaste wasn’t half-bad. Lemon water lovers, rejoice. This may just be the thing for you.

Highlights

The biggest con I’m going to identify for myself might just be the biggest pro depending on the audience. While I was not a huge fan of the exorbitantly orange peel flavor, I could see plenty of CBD newbies finding value in this oil. Unlike the lemon-flavored oil (which we’ll get to in a minute), I could actually see someone adding half a dropper of this oil to a cocktail or soda in place of bitters. And because the price is decent for an oil of this potency, I’d say go for it to all the orange zest lovers out there in search of an everyday supplement.

Toast CBD Oil: Lemon

This oil was easily my least favorite out of the products I tried. Much like the orange oil, it was indexing a little too high on the essential oil front, only the lemon was so overtly bitter I could barely stomach it. Anticipating I might not be a fan of the flavor, I dropped 0.25mL under my tongue and was immediately grateful I didn’t take more. A burst of concentrated lemon peel hit my senses, sending me rushing to the kitchen for a chaser.

As a result, it’s tough for me to say what effects you can expect from this oil. I wasn’t able to get enough down to really test my usual dose against other products. I will say that at least it didn’t give me a raging headache. This might not be the best consolation prize after trashing the flavor so hard, but there’s nothing worse than trying a product you instantly react negatively to and then getting adverse reactions. So, while I wasn’t able to test enough to gauge whether this product is a partial hit, at least the absence of side effects suggests it’s not a total miss.

Highlights

Much like the orange oil, I could imagine the average consumer either loving or hating this product. Citrus oils are an acquired taste, and if you’re not in the mood for a blast of citrus rind to hit your system, you’re not going to want to put this oil directly into your mouth. Maybe—maybe—I could see someone adding a few drops to a beverage, but because the potency is relatively low compared to other oils, the flavor could easily overpower whatever you’re adding it to once you get enough in there. At $65 per 1oz bottle it’s probably not worth the risk.
