Whether you’re using cannabinoids for fun, for medical benefits, to ease pain or just get a good night’s sleep, THC oil is a great solution. As well as offering the most useful cannabinoid for a range of conditions, THC oils let you get high without the smoke. But as with any hemp product, there are more disappointing oils out here than there are good ones.

We worked with experts to devise our Cannabinoid Product Quality Evaluation framework for exactly this reason. After taking an in-depth look at the THC oil market, these six products stood out from the competition.

What makes a CBD roll-on effective for pain?

More than THC

Getting some oil with only THC is a mistake. Non-intoxicating cannabinoids like CBD, CBG and CBC round out the effects and support most medical benefits. We prioritized oils with more than just THC.

Delta-9 is best (but others can work)

Delta-9 is the most common natural form of THC and the best option for a THC oil. However, delta-8 THC has milder but similar effects. Any oil we chose contained over 2 mg/ml of some THC.

THCV is not ideal

THCV counteracts the effects of THC at low doses, so we avoided oils that contained it.

Terpenes add to the experience

Terpenes are more important than you think. Linalool and myrcene will contribute to a more relaxing high. For uplifting effects, choose limonene and pinene.

If for whatever reason you want to get high this year, we used our expert-backed framework to choose just six THC oils from a starting pool of 51.

Cornbread Hemp’s Whole Flower CBD Oil might not be the highest-THC oil out there, but the quality is off the charts. At just 2 mg/ml THC, you’d need to take at least 2-3 ml for a recreational dose, but it’s a great option for sleep promotion or microdosing.

As the name suggests, the oil is also derived from the cannabinoid-rich flowers of the plant. More than that, it’s USDA Certified Organic, grown in the Bluegrass Basin, Kentucky. This all gives the oil a rich cannabinoid profile – including CBD, THC, CBC, CBG and more – as well as a natural terpene-rich aroma.

The price is a little high, but Cornbread really raises the bar when it comes to their hemp.

  • USDA Certified Organic
  • Full spectrum: CBD, THC, CBC, CBG, CBDV and CBN
  • Flower-only extract
  • Great for sleep
  • Seed-to-sale brand
  • Contains terpenes
  • Low in THC
  • A little expensive

Medterra’s Max Relief Full Spectrum CBD Oil is another high-scoring THC-rich oil that’s better suited to use for pain relief or microdoses.

Like Cornbread’s oil, it has just 2 mg of THC and 50 mg of CBD per ml, but it’s backed up by other compounds. It also packs other cannabinoids including CBG, CBC and CBT, as well as a solid range of terpenes. Among them are limonene and pinene, both of which help produce an uplifting high.

Medterra doesn’t have certified organic hemp like Cornbread, but the oil has earned the US Hemp Authority certification. This speaks to their manufacturing more than anything, and that’s why they scored highly here too.

It’s a little pricey, but a solid choice.

  • Full spectrum: CBD, CBG, CBC, THC, CBT, CBN and CBDV
  • Contains limonene and pinene
  • US Hemp Authority certified
  • Rich in terpenes
  • Seed-to-sale brand

Carmen’s Medicinals is one of those brands that’s been doing the right things in the background, but don’t often break through onto these lists. But their full spectrum CBD Oil is a solid choice if you’re looking for some THC-rich oil.

Carmen’s Medicinals stand out for their high-quality, USDA Certified Organic hemp and their GMP-certified, FDA-registered manufacturing facilities. The result is a cannabinoid-rich THC oil that also offers substantial doses of CBD, CBG, CBN and CBC. The oil is also rich in terpenes, notably including limonene (uplifting) and myrcene (relaxing), offering a balanced experience.

The high CBG and CBD content makes this a great option for pain relief especially. However, a couple of ml can work for recreational use.

  • USDA Certified Organic hemp
  • Full spectrum: CBD, CBG, CBN, THC, CBC and CBDV
  • Terpene-rich
  • Contains limonene and myrcene
  • High-quality manufacturing
  • Seed-to-sale brand
  • Solid price per mg CBD
  • Good for pain relief
  • Still quite low in THC
  • CBD:THC ratio not ideal for recreational use

Aspen Green’s Rest Organic Full Spectrum CBD Oil has just enough THC to be usable recreationally, but really comes into its own if you’re looking for a sleep aid. With a good dose of THC for a barely-noticeable calm and plenty of CBD, it also adds chamomile and valerian root to help you doze off.

Aspen Green makes products with high-quality, Colorado-grown organic hemp in a GMP-certified manufacturing facility, and has complete control over the process from seed-to-sale. They really clean up on our framework.

Their Rest oil contains a full spectrum of natural cannabinoids and terpenes, including sleep-promoting beta-caryophyllene and CBC, CBG and CBN.

While we’d rather not combine supplements with hemp, the results are hard to argue with.

  • USDA Certified Organic hemp
  • Full spectrum: CBD, CBC, THC, CBG, CBDV and CBN
  • Contains beta-caryophyllene, a sleep-promoting terpene
  • Good THC dose for sleep
  • Seed-to-sale brand

The Oil from Feals might be a little on the expensive side, but it’s a potent oil when it comes to both CBD and THC. With 3 mg/ml of THC and a huge 160 mg/ml of CBD, it packs a lot into a small container.

If you’re looking to use THC to help you get some sleep, the Oil is one of the best options out there. It contains about 6 mg/ml of CBN, which seems to promote sleep alongside THC and CBD. The beta-caryophyllene in the mix only boosts this potential. Plus, it achieves this without depending on supplements or non-hemp ingredients.

The only issue is the cost, but for an occasional nightcap it works well.

  • Potent oil (with weaker versions available)
  • Full spectrum: CBD, CBN, CBC, CBG and THC
  • Contains beta-caryophyllene
  • 3 mg THC per dose
  • Helpful for sleep issues
  • Organically grown hemp
  • Expensive
  • High CBD:THC ratio not great for recreational use

The Extra Strength version of Equilibria’s CBD Daily Drops is a great option whether you’re looking for pain relief, sleep promotion or even double-dosing for recreational purposes. It’s a great all-rounder THC oil, focusing on CBD and THC and keeping the ingredients simple.

This means Equilibria didn’t really do much to tailor it for specific uses, but the 20:1 CBD:THC ratio makes it very versatile. They do start off from high-quality, USDA Organic hemp and make the extract using the flowers, though. This strong baseline offers a range of cannabinoids, with CBDV, CBC and CBN in addition to the big names.

Some well-chosen terpenes could push it to the next level, but it’s still a dependable choice.

  • USDA Certified Organic Hemp
  • Full spectrum: CBD, THC, CBDV, CBC and CBN
  • Good for general use
  • Flower-only extract
  • Medium-high dose
  • Good price per mg THC
  • No detectable terpenes
  • On the expensive side for CBD
  • Good at everything; great at nothing

Other Products We Considered

From the starting point of 51 THC oils, we used some key criteria from our Cannabinoid Product Quality Evaluation framework to narrow the list down to these six THC oils. The most common reasons an oil didn’t qualify included:

  • No recent lab test: From the initial list, 12 products had a lab report that was over a year old. While this is better than the 5 products which didn’t have a lab report available at all, it’s still inadequate. Even if it was stored in perfect conditions, some THC oil kept for a year would almost have its cannabinoid content change over time.
  • No lab report at all: Of the 5 products with no lab report, two of them simply required a lot number to access. However, consumers can’t get this before purchase without emailing the brand. There is no benefit whatsoever to doing it this way.
  • Not safety tested: 15 products were not “full panel” safety tested on their most recent lab report. This includes tests for residual solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, microbial contamination and mycotoxins. This is needed for consumers to know that the product is safe to use, so none of these oils could be considered.
  • Not true full spectrum: 13 products were discounted because we couldn’t confirm they were genuinely full spectrum. We look for at least 4 cannabinoids detected and at least tests for terpenes. Isolates were exempted.

Three products made it through the initial checks but didn’t score over 80% on the full evaluation. These oils were: Sunmed’s Water Soluble extract, Vena’s Full Spectrum CBD Tincture and Five Microdose THC Drops.  These are all good, but not enough to earn a full recommendation.

You can see the full scoring here.

Methodology

  • Expert Insights: We used criteria from expert interviews (originally conducted for our Best THC Gummies list) to devise key criteria for THC oils in this list. These were used to guide the selection of specific products from each brand’s line-up. We restricted the list to oils with at least 2 mg/ml THC.
  • Market Research: We conducted an automated Bing search for “THC oils,” recording the URLs and scraped text from the first 250 results, as well as any relevant internal links. The resulting CSV file was then given to ChatGPT, along with the key criteria from the expert interviews. It was tasked with selecting up to 2 products per brand that met the criteria for this list. The results were then manually reviewed for final product selection.
  • Initial qualification and scoring: The list was then checked for key qualifying factors as described above. Generally, we accepted products with a verified lab report from the previous 12 months, showing at least four cannabinoids and tested for terpenes (except isolates). All qualifying products were scored for the final list.
  • Final ranking: Any products scoring over 80% were eligible for this list. Final rankings were based on this and previous first-hand testing.

Below, we’ve answered some of your most frequently asked questions about delta-9 THC oil.

What Is Delta-9 THC Oil?

Delta-9 THC oil (also referred to as “CBD + THC oil”, “CBD oil with THC”, “CBD delta-9 tincture”, and “compliant delta-9 oil”) contains hemp extract rich in THC and an oil base like MCT or hempseed oil. It is safe for consumption and may also contain other cannabinoids like CBD. There are different types of oil products on the market, such as delta-9 THC oil, full-spectrum CBD oil, and cannabis oil.

RELATED: What Is Hemp Delta-9 THC and Is It Legal?

It’s also important to note the difference between hemp and marijuana oil: hemp oil is federally legal and can only contain a certain amount of THC, while marijuana oil is only legal in states that have legalized cannabis.

Is Delta-9 THC the Same as Marijuana?

Hemp-derived delta-9 THC oil products produce similar psychoactive effects as cannabis oil products. The main difference is that the former is derived from hemp and federally legal whereas the latter type is derived from the cannabis plant and only available in licensed dispensaries.

Different Types of Tinctures

There are a few different types of oil products that you may come across while shopping. It’s important to understand the differences between these types of oils, as it will help you better understand which type is best for your health and wellness. We’ve broken them down for you below.

Cannabis Oil

Cannabis oil (also referred to as “marijuana oil”, “weed oil”, and “THC oil”) is an oil extract that comes from the marijuana plant, not the hemp plant. This oil will be very psychoactive, as it can contain varying amounts of THC. You can only find cannabis oil or marijuana-derived oil at licensed dispensaries in states that have legalized marijuana.

Delta-9 THC Oil

Delta-9 THC oil is the type of oil that we’ve listed above. These oils contain federally legal amounts of hemp-derived delta-9 THC. We consider delta-9 oils to be oils that have at least 1 mg of THC per serving. Delta-9 THC oils are legal to buy online and in retail stores nationwide without a medical card.

Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains less than 1 mg of THC per serving. It is an oil that contains a full-spectrum CBD extract, and full-spectrum extracts contain 0.3% THC. These types of oils are best for those who don’t necessarily want to pick up on the psychoactive effects of THC, as they are too low to be detected in full-spectrum CBD oils.

Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

Broad-spectrum CBD oil contains no THC at all. This type of oil contains a rich profile of other cannabinoids including CBD, CBG, CBN, and CBC, and is ideal for consumers who want to benefit from CBD without consuming any THC.

CBD Isolate Oil

CBD isolate oil contains no THC. This oil is similar to a broad-spectrum oil except it contains only CBD without any other cannabinoids.

What Are the Effects of Delta-9 THC Oil?

The effects of THC oil are going to vary from person to person. However, most people find that THC oil helps promote blissful, euphoric effects. When combined with CBD, things like stress and anxiety relief, as well as pain relief, are often reported. But, again, this will depend on the consumer.

Does Delta-9 THC Oil Get You High?

It can! Some delta-9 THC oil has high enough D9 content to promote psychoactive effects. However, some have very small amounts — so small, that you won’t get high at all. But, yes, it is possible for delta-9 THC oil to get you high.

In addition to delta-9 tinctures, there are other psychoactive hemp oils that get you high, including delta-8 THC oil, delta-10 THC oil, HHC oil, THC-P oil, and THC-O oil.

What’s the Strongest THC Oil You Can Buy Online?

You can buy some seriously strong THC oils online these days. The strongest options we came across were tinctures from Medterra, Five, and CBDfx

How to Use Delta-9 THC Oil?

Dropping THC oil into beverage
Photo: Medterra

You can consume delta-9 THC oil in a few different ways, and this will depend on your personal preference. For the quickest, most effective results, you can place your THC oil dosage under your tongue and hold it for about 20-30 seconds before swallowing. Or, you can choose to add your oil to your food or beverage. This will disguise the taste and texture of the oil, but you’re still able to get the effects of the THC oil once you’ve digested your food or drink.

In terms of dosage, it’s important to start low if you’ve never tried delta-9 THC before. Beginning with around 2 mg of delta-9 THC is a good place to start. If you find that this amount isn’t strong enough for the results you want, you can increase your dose to about 5 mg instead.

Can You Smoke THC Oil?

You cannot smoke THC oils. However, you can vape THC vape juice products. When shopping, make sure you’re differentiating between delta-9 tinctures and THC vape juices. The ones that are meant for vaping will be clearly marked as so. With that in mind, don’t try vaping your tincture! It simply won’t work.

Is Delta-9 THC Oil Legal to Buy Online?

Yes, delta-9 THC oil is legal to buy online thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized hemp and hemp-derived products that contain less than 0.3% THC by weight. So, hemp-derived THC oils with that amount of THC or less by weight are legal to buy online.

RELATED: Where Is Delta-9 THC Legal to Buy?

However, you should double-check the cannabinoid laws in your area before trying to make a purchase. Some states have regulations regarding hemp-derived THC products and companies may not be able to ship to your address.

Where Can You Buy THC Oil?

THC oil products for sale at a local grocery store

You can buy THC oil from any of the retailers we listed above. It’s also possible to buy delta-9 THC oil from your local CBD store or vape shop. However, it’s important to always check a product’s COA before making a purchase to ensure it’s safe, legitimate, and pure. If you cannot find a COA for the product you’re looking at, stick to one of the great brands from our list.

Finding Your Favorite Delta-9 Tincture

Finding your favorite delta-9 THC oil has never been easier. Each one of the brands we listed offers high-quality tinctures with nice flavors and even better effects, giving you a full-body experience that we know you’ll love.
